Interview with our Course Ambassador: What I’ve learned so far

This month we’re highlighting our lovely course ambassador for Criminology, Robina Mwesigwa. As a Criminology student with Middlesex, you’ll learn so much over three years, but what does Robina think has been the most significant?

Here are just a few things she’s learned so far.

Robina Mwesigwa

What modules have taught you the most?

I have learnt the most from my Criminology in Late Modernity module and my Approaches to Research in the Social Sciences module. I feel this is because they have both given me skills which would be beneficial in the world of employment. Furthermore, I have learnt about the history of criminology and how it has evolved which has given me a better understanding of the field I am aiming  to establish a career in.

What topics have surprised you?

My sociology module has surprised me the most. This is because I was never interested in sociology much, however I have gained skills from this module which I have used during planning, and writing up my dissertation.

What soft and hard skills have you gained?

In regards to the soft skills I have gained, I feel I already possessed soft skills. However, being on this course I have been able to enhance these skills. For example, using different communication skills when addressing different audiences. In contrast, I have gained a great deal of hard skills from this course which include expert reading and writing skills, to being able to use different databases such as SPSS.

What’s something a specific professor has taught you?

My Placement tutor, has taught me how to be more professional when dealing with difficult management at work and helped keep me strong and positive by giving me great advice and words of encouragement. I now have great techniques of dealing with conflict in the workplace which I didn’t have before.

Did you do a placement? What did you learn there?

I did do a placement and at this placement, I worked with organisations such as the police and the council. I also attended meetings about prolific offenders and how to minimise their crimes.

What have you learned from external speakers or department partners?

In my course, we have had many guest speakers, who have been very informative. I have learned about avenues to take to get into certain careers such as detective work. I have also learnt about the trial process as we had the opportunity to attend a mock trial.
