Bioengineering and medical engineering labs

As a bio or medical engineering student, you’ll study in some of the best facilities in the UK. Housed within a new eco-friendly centre specially-built for science and technology, our 30-plus labs include:

  • A bio-modelling centre
  • Robotics and mechatronics equipment
  • Mass spectrometry suite.

Bioscience suite

Our bioscience suite is equipped with an incredible range of equipment with which you can analyse environmental samples.

Facilities include fluorescence microscopes to examine biological samples. You will also have access to microbiological and molecular equipment, affording a broad range of analytical capabilities.

Cell and tissue culture lab

Our dedicated cell and tissue culture lab is focused on the culture of mammalian cell lines. The laboratory's outstanding facilities include:

  • Biological safety cabinets for the sterile handling of cells
  • Four phase-contrast microscopes
  • Several atmosphere-controlled incubators for growing cells.

You can use the lab to discover new biomarkers which can be used to detect disease, as well as in vitro models to determine the efficacy of many potential treatments for disease.

This facility is essential to cancer, reproductive, stem cell and nano-pharmaceutics research at Middlesex.

Computer and communication engineering labs

As a computer communications student in the Faculty of Science and Technology, you will have access to a wide range of advanced equipment and software.

Our state-of-the-art internetworking labs are equipped with:

  • Cisco units
  • Blade servers
  • High-end simulation software
  • Industry-standard telecommunications equipment.

You will also be able to develop essential skills in digital systems and wireless communications, as well as build your very own hardware using tools and measurement equipment in the dedicated project laboratory.

Design engineering lab

Resourced with facilities to help you achieve pioneering design projects and research, our design engineering labs are custom built to incorporate the latest in industry standard equipment and software including:

  • CNN milling and CMM reverse engineering.

Environmental and occupational health suite

The environmental and occupational health suite contains industry-grade equipment which will enable you to experience the real-world process of investigation, engagement with clients, strategy development and the promotion of best practice in a business setting.

You’ll be using:

  • Our extensive collections of food and pests
  • A dedicated resource library.
  • Noise assessment equipment for both environmental and occupational exposure
  • Environmental pollution monitoring equipment
  • Occupational hygiene equipment
  • Building materials.

Hatchcroft building

Opened in 2008, the laboratories in our £36 million Hatchcroft building are second-to-none. The building is the home of world-class science research and teaching at Middlesex.

Biomedical students benefit from all the latest equipment, while the specialist BabyLab allows psychology researchers to carry out cutting-edge developmental work. The Hatchcroft building also houses advanced computing laboratories, where you can undertake research into communication through the use of technology, such as podcasting, interactive mobile devices and social networking.

You'll develop your skills on the same systems used in the clinical environment to make sure you are industry-ready when you graduate.

Our unrivalled mass spectrometry and analytical facilities are available for students and researchers studying biomedical sciences, biology and environmental sciences.

Our exceptional array of high-end equipment can support your research in:

Mechatronics lab

Our mechatronics facility has been developed in collaboration with Festo Didactic to ensure it remains at the cutting-edge of automation and manufacturing technology.

Microbiology and molecular biology labs

Our microbiology labs offer everything you need to develop advanced microbial techniques. The facilities cater for infectious sample processing and culture of a variety of microorganisms.

You can develop molecular biology techniques such as:

  • Cloning and analysing DNA and RNA sequences
  • Quantify RNA levels
  • Separate DNA molecules.

You’ll be able to use industry-standard equipment including:

  • A Leica SP2 confocal microscope for the high resolution analysis of protein sub-cellular distribution
  • Our tissue culture facility for the large scale production of monoclonal antibodies and proteins.
  • A Nikon live cell microscope system for time lapse imaging.

Psychology facilities

In our Psychology Department, you’ll be using a variety of state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for both online and offline teaching, learning and research.

Across the department there is a broad range of expertise in neuroscience, psychophysiology and related disciplines, and our specialist equipment includes:

  • Six testing booths where you'll get hands-on experience in measuring EEG and conducting BioFeedback training using equipment such as BioPac and PowerLab
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) systems (128-electrode BioSemi, 64 electrode ActiChamp, R-Nets Brain Products)
  • Wireless systems (BioRadio and Brain Products LiveAmp)
  • Our neuroscience facilities also include both electrical (tDCS/tACS, NeuroConn) and magnetic brain stimulation (TMS, MagStim)
  • Eye-trackers for both adult and infant research (Tobii Technology)
  • Two large Apple Mac labs specifically adapted for psychology teaching
  • Specialist psychology laboratory cubicles for conducting individual projects

In our robotics and haptics lab you’ll have access to over 100 workstations with industry-standard equipment and software including:
