Wednesday 13 December 2023, 1pm to 2pm
Join us on campus for the Christmas Maths Lecture where you will be guided through the intriguing world of statistics and its impact on our perception of risk and reality.
From cycling without a helmet, visiting a country with contagious diseases, to living near the water, real life involves risks. Sometimes your perception of risk is distorted, making you think that some things are more – or less – risky than is actually the case. In this event you will discover how statistics untangles the complexities of risk perception, distorts, and reveals the truths hidden in data.
The key speaker will be Jen Visser-Rogers, Vice President for statistical research and consultancy at Phastar, who has used statistics to answer all sorts of questions about topics such as climate change and medicine. In this talk she’ll be taking you through some of the most important concepts in statistics as she looks at extreme weather events, pharmaceutical drug trials, bacon sandwiches, and more.
