Duha stood on campus on a sunny day with campus building in background

Clearing stories: Duha

When I didn’t receive the grades I wanted on results day, I was disappointed and nervous about my next step. I was very nervous when I went through Clearing, obviously, because it's a process I haven't been through before.

When I called up Middlesex, they made me feel very comfortable, very safe, and they made me feel very calm about the process. They explained to me everything that I was going to go through, and what was going to happen.

They assured me that they would give me all the support and help I needed, and then I just felt really reassured. I then felt very calm, and I was actually feeling really excited to go through the process.

Clearing gave me the time to research the university that was best for me and my course and I am so happy that I found Middlesex. I never expected to come to Middlesex, but I feel like now that I'm here, I wouldn't change a thing.

Duha's top-tips

My top-tips if you are researching Clearing and where you might apply to are:

  • Think about the locations, consider where you want to live and transport to and from your home or where you might be living if you are looking to move away.
  • Do lots of research on the course that you are going to study. My course at Middlesex provides me with a lot of opportunities for getting involved in real world projects and a lot of help from my lecturers as well.
  • Find out what financial help there is, Middlesex provide you with a lot of job opportunities that you can get involved in on campus, this has provided me financial freedom while studying.
  • Speak to students studying at the university, either by visiting the campus at an event or speaking with students on the website on Unibuddy – they will tell you exactly what it is like to be a student at the Uni!
  • See what support is available. I did feel a bit unsettled, a bit nervous going into a new place. I asked for help, and got it. Also, Middlesex has MDXWorks which helps with part-time jobs, internships, networking and graduate jobs. When it came to my career and when it came to navigating my CV. They gave me career tips and essentially what I could apply to when I'm in my second year, or the type of jobs that I can apply to.

My name is Duha and I'm currently in my second year studying for a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

I got to college and I opened my results. I then realized that, you know, I didn't get the grades that I needed.

And ultimately I did feel very disappointed. I felt um very upset, but when I then chose to go through the clearing process, I felt a bit more relieved.

So I chose to apply to Middlesex because Middlesex was a top choice for computer science. So we get really um hands-on experience uh dealing with real-life projects and situations that will benefit us in the real world.

Also when it comes to financial help, they provide you with a lot of job opportunities that you can get involved in on campus.

When I called up Middlesex at the admissions office, they made me feel very comfortable, very safe, and they made me feel very calm about the process. They explained everything to me that I was going to go through, um and what was going to happen.

I felt nervous obviously because it was my first year and it was a big university, bigger than my college and I didn't know what to expect.

Um I felt very happy because um I was at a place where they really valued my work and really valued me um, you know, pushing further and doing the best that I can do.

And I felt very content because I felt like this was the right place for me. The location of the campus um is very convenient to travel to from my house. It's surrounded by local restaurants, they have student discounts and it's also surrounded by greenery.

One of the opportunities that MDX has provided me that really helped boost my career was their help with my CV and providing me with all the networking events I needed.

So one thing that makes me really proud of my time at Middlesex is empowering and guiding young women specifically um to be in tech through content creation such as this, social media, TikTok, Instagram.

I never expected to come to Middlesex, but I feel like now that I'm here, I wouldn't change a thing. I feel like everything planned and worked out the way that I needed it to work out.
