Our motion capture studio utilises a 25-camera OptiTrack motion capture system and a Vanishing Point Viper to enable the creation of industry-level VFX and VP in a sound-proofed green-screen environment.

Through our partnership with Screen London, MA Film Production students have the chance to gain work experience on live sets alongside numerous professional filmmakers including directors, production designers, postproduction specialists, editors, set builders, prop masters and more. You will benefit from exposure to the real world of making film and television and gain direct access to a thriving network of professionals in film production and creative technical fields.
At MDX Studios, you won’t just study - you’ll work. Our MA programmes feature one- and two-year options with embedded, credit-bearing work placements on live industry projects. Placements can be long or short, and if a suitable opportunity is not available with an industry partner, we will create professional settings for you to work on university-led projects. You’ll build your CV while gaining experience in professional contexts, from independent content creation to working on productions in our state-of-the-art facilities.

Develop project management, budgeting and entrepreneurial confidence for creative industries.
This module explores narrative construction and visual storytelling across film and television. You’ll analyse and create compelling story worlds for diverse audiences.
You’ll examine the role of AI in contemporary creative practice, learning to integrate emerging technologies ethically and effectively into your production workflow.
Develop core technical skills in camera, lighting, editing or sound design through intensive hands-on workshops.
Learn the creative, interpersonal, and technical skills of directing, from interpreting a script to directing actors and leading a creative team through all stages of production.
Gain insight into budgeting, scheduling, and logistics, and learn industry-standard skills that will prepare you to manage film and television projects efficiently and professionally.
Explore the skills and techniques of documentary filmmaking while developing your own documentary stories and practice.
Develop proficiency in industry-standard editing software to manage complex post-production workflows.
Prepare for your major project by generating original ideas and bringing them to life with scripts, storyboards and animatics, while also upskilling in your specialist role.
Your final project allows you to create a major piece of film or television work that showcases your specialist skills and creative direction.

Teaching
You'll be taught by an experienced teaching team with a wide range of expertise and professional experience.
You’ll learn through workshops, studio sessions, collaborative projects, seminars, and individual tutorials. Practical filmmaking is combined with critical study, ensuring both creative depth and industry relevance.
Guest lectures from film professionals and visits to London studios will enrich your learning experience.
Your timetable will be built around on campus sessions using our professional facilities, with online sessions for some activities where we know being virtual will add value. We’ll use technology to enhance all your learning and give you access to online resources to use in your own time. Project information, recorded presentations, and assessment criteria will be provided through our online module page.

Outside of these hours, you’ll be expected to do independent study where you read, listen and reflect on other learning activities. This can include preparation for future classes. In a year, you’ll typically be expected to commit 1,200 hours to your course across all styles of learning. If you are taking a placement, you might have some additional hours.
Definitions of terms
Live in-person on campus learning – This will focus on active and experiential sessions that are both:
- Led by your tutors including seminars, lab sessions and demonstrations We'll schedule all of this for you
- Student-led by you and other students, like small group work and presentations.
Tutor set learning activities – This covers activities which will be set for you by your tutor, but which you will undertake in your own time. Examples of this include watching online materials, participating in an online discussion forum, completing a virtual laboratory or reading specific texts. You may be doing this by yourself of with your course mates depending on your course and assignments. Outside of these hours, you’ll also be expected to do further independent study where you’ll be expected to learn, prepare, revise and reflect in your own time.
You have a strong support network available to you to make sure you develop all the necessary academic skills you need to do well on your course.
Our support services will be delivered online and on campus and you have access to a range of different resources so you can get the help you need, whether you’re studying at home or have the opportunity to come to campus.
You have access to one to one and group sessions for personal learning and academic support from our library and IT teams, and our network of learning experts. Our teams will also be here to offer financial advice, and personal wellbeing, mental health and disability support.
Assessment is through portfolios, written reflections, collaborative productions, and your final major project. Feedback is continuous and developmental, supporting your creative and professional growth.

Qualifications
We normally require a 2:2 degree or above, or equivalent qualification, in film, media, or a related discipline, although other subjects may be valid.
We also consider candidates with other relevant qualifications or equivalent professional experience.

Portfolio review
We’ve put together some simple notes to help you prepare:
- Be selective about the work you show while continuing to show a range of skills and ability;
- Show mostly recent work that you are most proud of;
- Consider how to present your work and the impression the overall look of your portfolio will have on the viewer.
After you have applied, we will send you a link for you to submit your portfolio online via the applicant portal.
We welcome portfolios in any digital format. Please share your work in whatever way best represents your creativity and skills.

Fees and funding
The fees below are for the 2026/2027 academic year.
UK students1
Full-time students: £13,700
Part-time students: £90 per credit
Part-time students: £45 per dissertation credit
If you were to study over two years part-time, you would usually pay £5,400 for the first year of study, and £8,100 in the second.
International students2
Full-time students: £20,100
Part-time students: £134 per credit
Part-time students: £67 per dissertation credit
If you were to study over two years part-time, you would usually pay £8,040 for the first year of study, and £12,060 in the second.
Additional costs
The following course-related costs are included in the fees:
- All printing and copying required for your study
- Access to sound recording and mixing studios, editing suites, and colour grading suites
- Audio-visual equipment available for loan, including digital stills cameras, digital video recorders, digital audio recorders, a large range lighting gear, grip equipment, and specialist microphones.
