About your course

About your course

This module aspires to cultivate an understanding of the physiological and biomechanical principles underlying strength and conditioning, as well as the principles of performance nutrition. Students will learn skills relating to these principles, which underpin the science of physical performance. They will elevate their data analysis skills to investigate trends, assess the reliability of protocols, and critically evaluate current research. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of techniques to collect and analyse fitness testing data within Excel to discover trends and rationalise strength and conditioning programming. Additionally, they will delve into the principles of performance nutrition, learning how to optimise dietary strategies to enhance athletic performance and recovery. Students will also learn to recognise and disseminate novel data to coaches and athletes, and to design, interpret, and synthesise analysis data and literature. Through this transformative journey, students will be empowered to make significant contributions to the field, driving innovation and excellence in sports performance. 

This module empowers students to master the systematic understanding of performance analysis in sports. By building robust processes and gaining a comprehensive grasp of essential techniques, students will be equipped to excel in this discipline. They will critically evaluate sport performance using performance analysis techniques, including appropriate software, to identify strengths and weaknesses. Students will appraise performance analysis methodologies and findings that can be implemented to improve sport performance. Additionally, they will select appropriate performance analysis research to justify analytical processes. Through this journey, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of relevant techniques used in the discipline and build appropriate processes. This will not only enhance their analytical skills but also prepare them to make significant contributions to the field of sports performance analysis.

This module equips students with the critical knowledge and skills necessary to understand physical performance, monitor rehabilitation progression, and determine the readiness for return to play of athletes. Students will review the evidence pertaining to a selection of diagnostic tests and their validity in relation to assessment. Through comprehensive training, students will critically select a range of diagnostic, monitoring, and testing procedures, and interpret the data to make informed decisions.  

Additionally, students will design actionable solutions in terms of performance, rehabilitation, and return to play. Students will also develop the expertise to effectively communicate findings and their implications to both performers and coaches, fostering a collaborative environment that supports the athletes' journey to peak performance. By the end of this module, students will be well-prepared to make informed decisions that positively impact the health and success of the sporting population.

This module explores the relationship between physical and mental wellbeing in sport, covering psychological benefits, exercise adherence, rehabilitative uses, influences on youth engagement, and the role of sport in self-esteem, group behaviour, and mental health policies in elite sport. Additionally, students will evaluate processes of business management and leadership skills from both athlete and corporate perspectives. They will develop skills in synthesising processes and system-based approaches common in high-performance sports. This module aims to equip students to analyse and evaluate complex issues critically and systematically, making sound judgements in the context of sport business development, and to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

This module aims to equip students with the relevant knowledge and skills to undertake appropriate individual and group-based research (where applicable) in their subject areas. Students will learn searching strategies to identify relevant literature, how to critically appraise literature and relevant research methods topics such as research design, selecting and using suitable quantitative or qualitative approaches appropriate to the subject area.

The aim of this module is to guide students through an independent project where they are tasked with selecting and formulating a specific question or challenge that contributes to the generation of original knowledge to their field of study. Students will be required to design and develop a clear hypothesis, justifying their approach through ethical and rigorous methods to collect, analyse, and evaluate relevant data or information. The module also aims to encourage students to critically judge and appraise existing knowledge, identify gaps, and compare and contrast different perspectives to generate new insights.

Teaching and learning

Teaching

You'll be taught by an experienced teaching team with a wide range of expertise and professional experience.

The MSc in High Performance Sport Management at Middlesex University uses an online learning format. This approach is designed to give students the flexibility to study at their own pace while also providing opportunities for collaboration and discussion with fellow students and faculty members. There is also an optional in-person residential held within the Summer Term.

The online learning component of the program includes a range of interactive activities such as online lectures, group discussions, and case studies. Students are also provided with access to a range of online resources such as e-books, academic journals, and research databases. These online resources allow students to deepen their understanding of the key concepts and theories of sports management and to develop the critical thinking skills needed for success in the industry.

The residential component of the program includes workshops, seminars, and practical sessions, providing students with opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios. This practice-based learning element of the program is essential for preparing students for the challenges they will face in the sports industry. Through practical sessions, students will gain hands-on experience in areas such as performance analysis, diagnostics in sport performance, and strength and conditioning science, allowing them to develop the practical skills necessary for success in their chosen career. Attendance is optional, and not a requirement for successful completion of the programme.

You'll be based at our Hendon campus, north London.

Assessment is primarily through coursework. Coursework may include essays, case study presentations, reflective thinking diaries, and online practical assessments. In addition, students are required to complete a dissertation, which allows them to demonstrate their ability to carry out independent research in a chosen area of sports management, or alternatively develop their ability to apply theoretical concepts and analytical skills to real-world problems and challenges.

Qualifications

Students will require an undergraduate degree in a sport or exercise science related field (2.2 or above). Students with undergraduate degrees in non-related areas (at a minimum grade of 2:2) will be considered subject to relevant industry experience and professional qualifications. Additionally, students will be required to work within the field of athletic development, this may include professional clubs, governing bodies and/or private athletic training.

Qualifications

All candidates are required to satisfy the English language requirement. Candidates whose first language is not English and who are presenting qualifications other than the Leaving Certificate may satisfy the requirement through the completion of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) on the basis that they obtain a minimum band score 6.5 with average of 6.5 in each section at postgraduate level or an equivalent score of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or Cambridge, which denotes a very good skill level of English.

Further requirements

DBS (disclosure and baring service) is required for student placements*.

These checks will be explained and conducted during the first semester.  Obtaining a successful DBS will enable you as a student to undertake a placement or work experience hours as agreed by the programme or module leader. An unsuccessful DBS or lack of a DBS, could hinder a student’s ability to achieve any placement hours and prohibit you from graduating with a full degree.

You will not need a visa to study in the UK if you are a citizen of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. If you are a national of any other country you may need a visa to study in the UK. Please see our Visas and immigration page for further information.

International students who require a Student route (formerly tier 4) visa to progress on a course at Middlesex University must apply for study on a full-time basis. If you are on any other visa for the duration of study, please contact our admissions team to discuss possibilities of studying on a part-time basis.

English language requirements for international students

You must have competence in English language to study with us. The most commonly accepted evidence of English language ability is IELTS 6.5 or higher required.
