Course Overview

This course introduces the essential tools and workflows needed to begin working confidently in Sibelius. Through practical exercises, you will develop a strong understanding of the software’s interface and explore different methods for inputting and editing music notation. You will also learn how to manage score layout, work with text and formatting tools, and prepare your scores for professional printing.
This course forms the foundation for the Avid Certified/Sibelius Specialist exam and is suitable for anyone looking to gain a structured introduction to Sibelius. No prior experience with the software is required, but a basic understanding of musical concepts such as pitch, rhythm, time signatures, and key signatures is recommended.
By the end of the course, you will be able to navigate and understand the Sibelius interface, create scores with various instrumentations, input and edit notes and rhythms, work with MIDI content and selections, add and format text, and prepare scores for printing. You will also be ready to take the Avid Certified/Sibelius Specialist exam.
Course content
Becoming an Avid Certified Specialist for Sibelius demonstrates that you have a solid working knowledge of the software and understand the techniques used by professional composers. This includes creating and editing scores, inputting notes, adjusting pitch and rhythm, working with multiple voices, using drum mapping, managing layout and formatting, creating lead sheets, and handling instrument changes, among other core skills.
The module runs over three days at our Hendon campus in North London. Led by a fully certified trainer, the course takes you through each chapter of the Sibelius programme and equips you with the skills needed to work confidently in the software and prepare for the assessment. On the final day, you’ll sit a one-hour practical exam. If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you’ll have two further opportunities to retake the exam at a later date, giving you time to prepare.
