The Foundation Year in Sports is offered as an entry route to a Sports Science degree for students who don't yet meet the entry requirements for degree-level study.

Why choose Foundation Year in Sport at Middlesex?

Sport and exercise is a million-pound industry with a vast scope from Olympic athletes to personal fitness, to health. This course is an entry route to a Sport and Exercise Science and Sport Rehabilitation degrees for students who don't yet meet the entry requirements for degree-level study.

A foundation year might be a good choice if you don't have the right qualifications yet or feel ready for degree-level study. Or perhaps you are returning to study and want to get up to speed before starting a degree.

You will need to enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. When you complete this year successfully you will progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses.

Studying the Foundation Year in Sport allows you to progress to our other BSc sports degrees which open up a vast range of career options. Previous graduates have found success as lifestyle coaches, sports managers, sports coaches, physical therapists and trainers, sports science technicians, and sports development officers.

This course covers a broad range of sports and exercise sciences which will help you gain expert knowledge of scientific methods from sports psychology to the study of the human form. It will also help you gain the skills you need to study for a Sports degree such as written and oral communication skills, mathematical topics and concepts, and scientific concepts, principles and practical skills.

On graduation, from one of the related three-year degrees you can continue with your professional studies by working towards British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accreditation as a sports and exercise scientist.

    • SMART (Students Mastering Academic writing, Research and Technology) (30 credits) - Compulsory​

      This module introduces some fundamental mathematical topics and concepts that are required in a range of subjects studied at degree level. In a structured and supportive environment, you will begin to develop an appreciation of the importance of mathematics as an aid to understand and describe abstract ideas.

    • Foundation Mathematics (30 credits) - Compulsory​

      This module introduces some fundamental mathematical topics and concepts that are required in a range of subjects studied at degree level. In a structured and supportive environment, you will begin to develop an appreciation of the importance of mathematics as an aid to understand and describe abstract ideas.

    • Foundation Project (30 credits) - Compulsory​

      This module give you the relevant experience in a range of related subject-related projects that reinforce understanding of topics taught, and provide opportunities to apply the knowledge gained in other modules.

    • Introductory Sport Science (30 credits) - Compulsory​

      This module provides an introduction to the scientific concepts, principles and practical skills required to support studying at degree level. You will carry out investigative strategies utilising an interdisciplinary approach and communicate the results effectively in a range of given formats.

Facilities

As a Sport Science/Rehabilitation student, you will spend much of your time at Saracens StoneX Stadium – a professional sporting facility that provides a real working environment to support our academic programmes.

This close and unique relationship between a professional sports club (currently rated top in the UK and Europe) and our University, gives us a niche market reputation in attracting students from all around the UK, as well as internationally.

Teaching environment

We have dedicated laboratories for studying physiology, biomechanics and performance analysis, as well as a strength training room, a health and fitness lab and rehabilitation and soft-tissue massage room. You also have access to cutting-edge technologies such as motion capture, force plates and full body scanning, plus much, much more.

Student support

Katherine Paice
Course Leader

Kat is a lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science. She has Masters degrees in Sport and Exercise Physiology and Sport and Exercise Nutrition.

Kat has been with the London Sport Institute since 2015. Her teaching covers Physiology across all year groups, as well as Movement Analysis, Professional Skills and Undergraduate and Postgraduate nutrition.

Kat has worked with many elite athletes in cycling, rugby, football, tennis and boxing, as well as some Team GB athletes in track and field.


We’ll carefully manage any future changes to courses, or the support and other services available to you, if these are necessary because of things like changes to government health and safety advice, or any changes to the law.

Any decisions will be taken in line with both external advice and the University’s Regulations which include information on this.

Our priority will always be to maintain academic standards and quality so that your learning outcomes are not affected by any adjustments that we may have to make.

At all times we’ll aim to keep you well informed of how we may need to respond to changing circumstances, and about support that we’ll provide to you.
