Amberin Dino, BA Marketing and Digital CommunicationsI am a second-year student from Ethiopia and decided to study Marketing at Middlesex University for my undergraduate. I did my first year at their Dubai campus and transferred to London for my second year, so I have a lot of experience when it comes to adjusting to new cities, meeting new people and creating communities and making the most of my university life.
While I love all the traveling I do, my focus is to get the most out of my education. This article will hopefully show you how to find the balance between having fun and exploring a vibrant city like London while also prioritising your studies.
Come to London earlier than your start date
This - in my opinion - gives you the time to make an itinerary of all the things you can take care of before class starts, such as visiting the tourist spots, completing enrolment and getting used to any transportation system you might use to go to and back from university. If your accommodation is not yet secured, I recommend doing it as soon as possible and contacting the accommodation team of Middlesex University to make the process easy with the support you need.
Know who your programme leader and academic advisor is for your course
This is essential for all students. Tutors are there to support you in your studies and can be great mentors in general when it comes to career advice, how to approach your specific course, picking optional modules, and what to expect.
Career office and other supporting offices
These services offer specialised events, resources, and one-on-one support to help international students navigate unfamiliar recruitment processes. They support with CVs and cover letters, developing soft skills, and connecting with potential employers able to hire international graduates. Other support includes student learning assistants to help with coursework by giving feedback, proofreading and editing.
Go to the library
There are two libraries available to Middlesex students: Sheppard Library and Hendon Public Library, in addition to the online library that has access to Dubai, London and Mauritius books. The database has ample resources to aid with research and citations, and there are also specialist facilities like the Financial Markets Suite. Sheppard Library offers free laptop loans, printing, and personalised study support.
Make connections
Middlesex University in London offers a vibrant international student life, with opportunities to connect with students from over a hundred nationalities. London, consistently ranked as one of the best student cities, provides access to museums, art galleries, shopping, nightlife, and green spaces. Middlesex University has over 50 clubs and societies, including the Language and Cultural Exchange, K-pop society (which I love), and more. International students can make friends and connections for life in this diverse community.
Middlesex University is a really popular university for international students, with good reason. The University also provides support with applications, visas, and pre-departure briefings through regional teams located around the world.
