Omar Maaouane VeigaWhy did you choose MDX?
When I attended the university's open day, I was absolutely amazed by all the equipment available to students. Since I was 11, I have been learning about robotics by taking apart broken electronics and buying components from eBay with whatever pocket money I had. I chose to study at MDX primarily because of the access to these state-of-the-art facilities. On the robotics side, you can work on projects involving advanced mobile robots and industrial robotic manipulators. On the mechatronics side, you have access to 'cyber-physical laboratories' and 'MPS stations,' which are essentially mini factories incorporating actual industry-standard technology for hands-on learning. Not only is this equipment incredibly expensive, but it also prepares you to integrate seamlessly into the industry after graduation.
What do you think of the teaching?
I think the teaching is fantastic. The content is highly relevant, and the tutors are always willing to assist with any doubts you may have. There is a strong emphasis not only on technical content but also on understanding how the engineering industry operates and preparing you for life beyond graduation. Additionally, you are offered numerous extracurricular opportunities, such as guest lectures, WorldSkills, and the IMechE Design Challenge, to help you grow beyond the classroom.
What do you think about the way the course is supporting your future and career prospects?
I believe the course is preparing me exceptionally well for my future career and prospects. For instance, in the second year, there is an entire module called 'Engineering in Context,' which focuses on understanding the engineering industry in the real world. This module features guest lectures from seasoned industry professionals across a wide range of fields, who share their experiences firsthand.
You are also strongly encouraged to pursue a placement year, and must apply for placements independently, just as you would apply for jobs after graduation. MDXworks, the careers service, provides subject-specific guidance to help you tailor your CV and cover letter for employers. Personally, I had Rabia, who was incredibly helpful in improving my CV and enhancing my overall job application skills.
On the technical side, the course teaches you how to use a variety of industry-standard software such as Siemens NX, Plant Simulation, ROS, PLC Programming, TIA Portal, SOLIDWORKS, Git, and more. Almost all of the software we use requires special licenses, and the equipment (especially in mechatronics) is identical to what you’d find in the industry. This gives you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the tools and technologies used in the robotics and mechatronics sectors, which would be hard to achieve without the resources provided by the university.
That’s not even mentioning the multitude of opportunities to participate in competitions and get noticed by industry professionals early on. I recently won a gold medal in the WorldSkills National Automation competition, which opened many doors for me to network with industry experts and gain valuable insights on how to advance my engineering career after graduation.
What do you love about Middlesex?
Aside from the access to facilities and equipment (can you tell I love the facilities and equipment?), I also love the fact there are so many fun societies and well-organized events – something for everyone. For example, I really enjoy attending the Games Society, where we gather every Friday in the Vine Building to play our favourite video games. It’s incredibly fun, and I’ve made so many amazing friends through it.
Does MDX give you enough support in your studies and in general?
I believe MDX provides sufficient support for your studies. While they won’t hold your hand, the tutors always respond promptly, clearly, and concisely. They are consistently supportive, and beyond that, there are numerous additional resources available, such as the library, UniHelp, and more.
Anything else you'd like to say about any aspects of your experience at Middlesex?
Overall, it has been an incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling experience, where my skills have grown beyond what I could have imagined, and I feel confident that I can pursue the career and life I aspire to and one I will be proud of.
