Wilma Claesson, BA Graphic Design

My name is Wilma Claesson, and I recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from Middlesex University.

My creative journey began during college, where I studied Film and TV Production. During those years, I discovered an interest in graphic design and visual storytelling. After college, I briefly studied Computer Science, but soon realised it wasn’t the right path for me.

I came to the understanding that I wanted to challenge myself in a more creative and expressive field. Therefore, three years ago, I made the decision to move from Sweden to London to follow my dream of becoming a graphic designer.

Why I chose Middlesex to study graphic design

When I was searching for a university that suited me, I spent a lot of time researching and speaking with different universities across the UK. My goal was to find a place where I could grow as a designer and develop the skills needed to prepare me for the creative industry. After a lot of hard work to create my portfolio and write my personal statement, I chose to study at Middlesex University.

I chose MDX because I liked their approach to design and their way of teaching. The learning focus was not just on classroom teaching, but on creating our own studio environment where we could collaborate, share ideas, and learn from one another. I also appreciated the opportunity to receive personal feedback from tutors, which is something I knew would help me grow as a designer during my studies.

Career support and real-world experience

During my time as a student, I completed two years of internships at two different companies, with valuable support from Careers and Futures in preparing my CVs and cover letters. I chose to pursue these internships because I believed it was important not only to learn but also to apply my skills in a real work environment and gain early professional experience.

Balancing internships with my studies required a lot of hard work and dedication, but I felt consistently supported by my tutors and, in particular, my programme leader, Michael Wright. My main driving force has always been my passion for creativity and design, which continues to motivate me to become the best designer I can be. I truly feel that Middlesex University has played a key role in nurturing and supporting that journey.

Landing my first role through Middlesex’s industry connections

During my third year, as I was approaching the end of my studies, we received an email from Michael informing us that a design company was looking to hire a new graduate from the MDX Graphic Design programme. I applied, went for the interview, and was offered the position just five minutes later. I’m extremely grateful to MDX for giving me the opportunity to start my career and for helping me transition directly into work after graduation. I truly felt prepared for the professional world of design thanks to the skills and experience I gained throughout the course at MDX.

Working as a Junior Motion Designer

I’m currently working as a Junior Motion Designer at Chapter3Graphic, where I get to apply the knowledge and skills I gained at MDX every day and do what I love.

My journey began when I studied Film and TV Production in college, followed by Graphic Design at MDX. Now, I’ve been able to combine those two worlds and work in a field I’m truly passionate about.

Advice for prospective students

My advice for prospective students is to make the most of your time at university. MDX offers a wide range of resources and facilities that can truly help you develop as a designer. Take advantage of the tutors, the workshops, and the equipment whenever you can, and don’t be afraid to experiment.

Knowledge doesn’t come on its own; it’s important to work both hard and smart to achieve your goals, and MDX really gives you every opportunity to succeed.

Creating memories at Middlesex

It’s also easy to focus solely on your studies and future career, but that’s not everything in life. During my time at MDX, I’ve also had the chance to create unforgettable memories, play football for the university's women's team, and meet some of my closest friends, which are experiences that are just as valuable as building a career you love and are passionate about.

So, thank you MDX for all the memories, knowledge, and lessons you’ve given me. They’re something I’ll carry with me throughout my life and career.
