Yolande Gunn, BA Primary Education (QTS)Being a university student comes with its challenges, especially when it comes to juggling university life with my bank balance.
I’m currently on a school-based placement, which has been a fantastic opportunity for my career, but it also meant pausing my part-time job. While focusing on the placement has been important, it’s meant I’ve needed to plan my finances around my studies.
Without income from my part-time job, I’ve had to budget carefully for travel and daily expenses.
The good news? With the right support from Middlesex University, I’ve still been able to enjoy student life in London.
Financial support from Middlesex
Travel bursary
Middlesex offers a range of financial support options for students who need help managing the cost of living.
One of the most helpful schemes for me has been the Middlesex Travel Bursary. After explaining how the cost of living was affecting me during my placement, I applied through MyMDX, the university’s online student portal.
The application was quick and straightforward, and I heard back the same day! The bursary didn’t cover all my rent or travel expenses, but it made a noticeable difference and helped reduce some of the financial pressure. Thanks to that support, I can focus more on my studies and placement without constantly worrying about money.
Free university resources
The support at MDX doesn’t end with bursaries. The university also offers free resources that help save money and make studying easier.
For example, there are scholarships available for students who meet certain criteria, including the Sports Excellence Scholarship.
The MDX Library provides free access to textbooks, journals, and even laptop loans. I’ve personally used the laptop loan service - it’s been a lifesaver! Instead of buying a new laptop, I’ve been able to borrow one from the library with just my student ID.
Budgeting tips and non-financial support
In addition to direct funding, Middlesex University offers non-financial support. This includes:
- Budgeting advice and money management tools
- Help finding part-time jobs that fit around your schedule
- Access to student wellbeing services if you need to talk things through
These services are a great reminder that support isn’t just about money - it’s also about feeling confident and prepared during your studies.
My advice to manage your money
There is lots of support at Middlesex to help with your finances.
