Q&A with Angelica Ngoma, BA Early Childhood Studies at Middlesex University
Why did you choose this course?
I chose this course because of my passion for working with children and my interest in understanding their development, learning and well-being. Early childhood is a critical stage in life and I was motivated to learn how this could impact a child’s development. This course offers skills and theoretical knowledge in child psychology and education, with analysis of the academic disciplines, which allows me to reflect on issues affecting early childhood.
What skills have you learned?
Reflection has been essential for analysing how child development is managed in a holistic way, enabling me to critically assess theoretical practice. Communication has been pivotal to network with, learn from and collaborate with peers, academics and practitioners. My ability to engage in critical thinking has developed through lectures and assessments, especially in modules such as Children and Families in a Diverse Environment. Understanding race, gender, inequality and inclusive practices has enabled me to advocate for creating safe and inclusive learning spaces for children.
What additional opportunities do you have?
Placements have been invaluable in applying theoretical knowledge into practice. I’ve gained first-hand work experience and insight into the role of early years practitioners. My volunteering work and understanding of contemporary issues in early years has enabled me to explore the impact of poverty, social class and the emotional aspects of a child’s development. Learning how children experience racism and inequalities in professional settings has also made me a more conscious and critical early years practitioner.
What doors will this course open for you?
It will open a variety of career opportunities for me. I am passionate about working in early years and would like to progress to roles such as a PGCFE postgraduate student to become a college lecturer. I’d also love to work in child policy and advocacy, providing information to support early years professionals, children and their families. The knowledge and skills I have gained empower me to work in a range of diverse contexts.
