Arinos Cardoso - Year 2: BA Business Management

If you’re looking for a Business Management degree in London that prepares you for the real world, I’d definitely recommend Middlesex University. From day one, I’ve felt supported and encouraged, and I’m gaining the skills and experience I need to take my next steps in the business world.

A flexible approach to learning

One of the things I love most about studying BA Business Management at Middlesex is the assessment structure. Unlike traditional universities, there are no sitting exams, which means I don’t feel pressured during my studies.

Instead, our grades are based on assignments, allowing me to fully understand the material and apply it practically. This approach has made learning more enjoyable and stress-free.

Support from studies to finance

My experience at Middlesex has been incredibly positive thanks to the supportive learning environment. The academic support is top-tier, with lecturers always willing to help. They are generous with feedback, recognising the effort students put into their coursework.

Choosing a university is a big decision, and for me, Middlesex University stood out because of the financial support it offered. Receiving a £2,500 scholarship in my first year was a huge help along with the paid work opportunities whilst I study.

A highlight of my time here has been working as a course ambassador, connecting with other students and sharing my experiences. This role has also enhanced my confidence and communication skills, essential for my future career in business.

Skills that prepare you for a business career

Middlesex University offers amazing career support through the Careers and Futures team. I regularly visit them for CV feedback, application advice, and information about employer events. This has given me opportunities to meet and network with industry professionals, opening doors for internships and placements.

Throughout my time at Middlesex, I have developed a range of skills through the graduate competencies framework that will help me in my future career:

  • Communication and public speaking: Working as a course ambassador has improved my ability to speak confidently in front of large audiences.
  • Teamwork: Playing for the Middlesex rugby team has taught me how to work effectively within a team.
  • Innovation and problem-solving: One assignment required us to develop solutions for Enterprise Mobility’s business challenges, helping me think critically and creatively.
  • Technical skills: I have gained strong Excel skills, which are essential for modern business operations.
  • Supply chain knowledge: My studies include learning about supply chain management and how businesses can innovate in this area.

My ultimate goal is to start my own business, and Middlesex University is giving me the knowledge and skills to achieve that. Every module I take provides insights into different aspects of business management, from marketing to operations.

The University’s industry connections are invaluable. Attending networking events and joining Enactus has helped me engage with professionals and fellow students who share similar aspirations. Middlesex is truly preparing me for a successful future by ensuring that our assignments and coursework reflect real-world business challenges.

Advice for prospective students

For anyone considering Middlesex University, my top 3 tips are:

  • Explore the different modules to help get a clear idea of what area of business you want to focus on. My field, Business Management, is broad, and having a direction from the start will help you make the most of your studies.
  • Take full advantage of the career support on offer: Employers are looking for candidates with practical experience, so internships and networking opportunities are key to standing out in the job market.
  • Get some extra income as a course ambassador: This has been helpful enabling me to gain skills and a little extra money to support my studies.

Looking back, I wish I’d decided earlier on my specific area of focus in business to make the most of my studies. But overall, my experience has been supportive, inspiring, and engaging, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Middlesex University has given me the tools, confidence, and opportunities to succeed, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.
