The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has just welcomed Tsz Kiu Shum, known as Debby, as its newest student member.

A Middlesex University student has become the 1,000th member of a prestigious industry body for health and safety professionals.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has just welcomed Tsz Kiu Shum, known as Debby, as its newest student member.

IOSH is a chartered independent professional body representing those that work in occupational health and safety (OSH) and related disciplines.

It is responsible for accrediting and monitoring the quality of MDX's undergraduate and  postgraduate programmes offered in occupational health and safety.

Debby, a 36-year-old based in Hong Kong, is delighted to hold this ‘title’ of being the 1,000th member.

“It’s my honour. I feel very special and excited,” said Debby, who is studying for a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Safety and Health Management at Middlesex University in partnership with the Open University of Hong Kong,

In 2018, IOSH launched its student membership category to develop and improve support for those new to the profession in the UK and worldwide.

Debby said: “IOSH offers the perfect platform for me to learn and develop my career, as well as extend my network internationally. There are plenty of valuable resources, up-to-date information, news, training and events available, which I can explore and digest any time I want."

This landmark for IOSH comes at a time when many students are preparing to start their first OSH qualification in higher education and the Covid-19 pandemic is shining a light on the vital role played by OSH professionals in the workplace.

“I think nowadays people are more aware that OSH is essential and important, " Debby added.

Debby’s own interest in OSH was sparked by her role as a social compliance specialist, which included looking into the health and safety performance of factories.

The BSc Occupational safety and Health Management is offered by Middlesex University at our London campus and in Hong Kong where it is operated in partnership with the Open University of Hong Kong.

Dr Ruth Plume, Programme Leader of the M.Sc. and B.Sc Occupational Safety and Health, said: "We encourage our students to join IOSH as they can benefit from support with professional development which can boost post-study employability, career support and networking with other IOSH members.

"I am delighted that Debby, one of our Hong Kong students, has become the 1000th person join IOSH’s student membership scheme as a new professional and I wish her well in her future career."
