Name: Yasmin Pena
Course: BA Interpreting and Translation
Year: 2nd year
Where are you from: Barcelona, Spain
What made you choose Middlesex University?
I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career related to languages, and one of my main goals whilst living in Spain was to eventually study in the U.K, particularly London. I did not want to go to a university in central London because of the expense related to housing and transport. However, at Middlesex I could afford the reasonably priced halls of residence offered to students. The fact that I didn’t have to commute to University via public transport allowed me to save some money and enjoy student life.
What attracted you to your course and made you apply?
When I found out that Middlesex University offered Interpreting and Translation as a single degree I immediately put it down my first choice because of the uniqueness of the course.
What aspects of the course do you enjoy most?
I love the fact that the course is very practical and we get the chance to practice interpreting in the booths available on campus. We often have seminars with professional qualified translators who offer tips and advice regarding the industry and insight based on their personal experiences. Additionally we also have translation modules where we are informed on the different types of texts one must be prepared to translate, and how to overcome translation challenges. Most importantly we are shown how to use CAT tools, which are critical for career in the translation industry.
What is it like being an EU/international student at Middlesex?
It is great! You will find many people from all over the world who are in the same position as you. People are very friendly and approachable so there is no need to worry. You will make friends instantly.
What is your fondest memory of life at Middlesex?
My fondest memory has to be of the Christmas dinner that was cooked by one of our flatmates in Ivy Halls (Halls of residence) for 15 people; we all contributed to organising the room so that we could finally tuck into the delicious Sunday roast. Afterwards we exchanged Christmas presents and enjoyed each others company while relaxing and watching Christmas films. It was a lovely occasion for the people who didn't travel home as it meant that we could still enjoy Christmas.
What one piece of advice would you give to a prospective student interested in studying at Middlesex?
I would recommend attending one of the open days as they give you a true feel of the campus as it is not the same as seeing it in pictures. There is also an opportunity to speak to your future programme leader on order to get a deeper insight of the course you wish to apply for and the facilities that are available at Middlesex.
What advice would you offer to international students thinking of coming to Middlesex?
I would advise you to apply for halls of residence as early as possible to avoid disappointment, join any social societies that interest you as they will help you to make new friends, and finally, if you are looking at helping other people and getting paid for it, I would advise you to apply for the Student Ambassador role. The position of Student Ambassador will give you interpersonal skills which will help you in your professional career (if you wish to apply for the student ambassador role or any other job, make sure to have a national insurance number beforehand, as you will need this in order to work).
What is the attraction of coming and studying in the UK?
First of all, do not be afraid of moving abroad because it will be one of the best experiences in your life! You will get to experience a totally different culture and get the chance to practice your English language skills while making friends from different counties. Remember that you are not alone, and Middlesex will help you however possible.
Why did you become a student ambassador and what do you like about it?
I remember the first day I arrived at Middlesex in October. There was an amazing vibe to the campus, everybody was very friendly and in particular, the student ambassadors, who helped me out a lot in regards to adapting well to my new surroundings. Because of this, I wanted to help out prospective students and give them the welcoming they deserve!
What does the future hold for you?
Once I graduate I am thinking of doing a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages for Secondary Education to broaden my career path options and be able to teach other students my native language, which is Spanish. Alongside this, I would like to become a freelance translator and interpreter as I have a great passion for teaching languages, being able to help others and gain more knowledge in various fields.
Would you recommend Middlesex?
Yes, definitely! This university has given me opportunities I would have never imagined. I have been able to gain a variety of skills by being an ambassador alongside working with children, which will be beneficial for my future career aspirations of working with secondary school students. My course lecturers have been very professional, supportive and knowledgeable. Finally, I was able to be an active member of the Language Academy Society, which aims to contribute to language learning at Middlesex and has experienced great success along the way.
So overall, Middlesex has immensely prepared me with the adequate skills to be able to feel confident once graduating and entering the professional world.
