I'm Sean Wade, and I teach on 3D animation for Games and Film.

My name is Josh Barton.

I'm a lecturer in Games Design.

What we offer is a true design course.

We're training students to be the architects of experience.

That means becoming expert communicators, really understanding what makes a game experience, how to produce an experience for other people to kind of go through, and thinking about how, you sit at the centre of a creative team and you really drive all of the aspects of the game.

I think it's a combination of two things.

Students who are motivated and eager to develop their skills and the facilities also reflect that.

We've got a greenscreen room fully fitted for motion capture and virtual production, which is quite large.

We train our students using software that's reflective of what's used in industry.

So we're using Unreal Engine and Unity.

We've had guest lectures and masterclasses hosted by industry professionals who have worked on Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto, Hogwarts Legacy, Fall Guys and EVE Online.

I'm getting support from a lot of people, both lecturers and also students from other years.

I felt very welcome.

And also, they take our feedback very seriously.

Like, our voices matter a lot.

The communication techniques and skills that we teach help them use their technical skills, such as modelling, texturing, rigging, animation, virtual production, VFX.

My favourite moment, I would say comes every year, is to see the outcomes from the students.

Because we work on live briefs at the end of the year, we have a show where we see all the students work at the end of it, and we have our industry guests come in.

And that's always really good to see, strong outcomes. There's all the inclusivity and all this safe space, I feel more confident, I can express myself more freely.

So I think my favourite moment at Middlesex is characterised by the game jams that we do a couple of times a year.

And there is a really magical moment at the end of these game jams where students take what was previously pieces of code and scripting and ideas for games, and then suddenly other people are playing them and they become an experience that other people have.

Industry experience and partnerships

Our courses are designed to reflect how work is produced in animation studios, film sets and games companies. You’ll:

  • Work on live or industry-informed briefs that mirror real production workflows
  • Collaborate with tutors and guest-lecturers such as animators, directors, editors, game designers and producers who have contributed to major film and game titles.
  • Take part in screenings, showcases and opportunities to submit work to festivals or competitions, where appropriate.
  • Learn how to pitch ideas, give and receive feedback and collaborate across disciplines, so you develop not just craft but the mindset of a professional.

This focus on professional practice helps you understand what it’s like to work in creative industries while you’re still studying.

News

What I most enjoyed about studying at MDX was the strong sense of diversity and the welcoming environment that came with it. Being surrounded by people from different backgrounds not only made the experience richer but also encouraged open-mindedness and collaboration.
