Dr Ruqiyabi Naz Awan

Naz’s academic background is in educationalpsychology with her research evaluating the impact of technology on teachersand learners. She has been Programme Leader on Higher Education Teacher trainingprogrammes at Queen Mary University of London and more recently at MiddlesexUniversity. Her most recent research has looked at examining the issuesunderlying retention, engagement, progression and experience for young maleBlack and Ethnic minority students in Further and Higher Education in the UK. The issue of retention, engagement and progression amongst male studentswas also examined in the context of the United Arab Emirates in relation toEmiratisation. While in the Emirates Naz’s research also examined therelationship of education and labour market economics, health education, careerexpectations as well as fiscal literacy. The final strand of her research inthe Emirates looked at the issue of teacher education and development inrelation capacity building of key and transferable skills. Before joining the EducationDept at Middlesex she held academic positions as a Senior Lecturer andProgramme Leader for an MRes programme within the Graduate School at theUniversity of East London. She has also been the Head of Student Success atCity University and was responsible for working with Faculties and Schools toimprove students’ engagement as well as designing and overseeing projects alignedto the Access and Participation Plan. Prior to this she was a Lecturer inEducation and Programme Leader at The British University in Dubai on postgraduate programmes (MEd, EdD).  She hastaught at the UG, MA, MSc, MEd, MRes and EdD and PhD level in the UK, Japan, Belgium andthe United Arab Emirates.
