Clearing FAQs

Understanding Clearing

Clearing, or UCAS Clearing, gives you the chance to study the course that's right for you at the university of your choice, after the normal UCAS cycle has finished. Every year, Clearing helps thousands find a University place and a home for the next 3 years (or beyond!). We've added some of the most common questions to help you understand Clearing and make it easy as possible for you.

UCAS Clearing matches applicants to university places yet to be filled. UCAS Clearing is available to anyone who has made a UCAS undergraduate application and doesn't hold any offers.

You can apply for UCAS Clearing if:

  • you're applying after 30 June.
  • you didn't receive any offers.
  • you changed your mind about the course or university.

If you already have your qualifications from a previous year, you can apply now directly via UCAS. This means you can apply earlier than most students and find a free place on the course you want before it's full. Call us on 0208 411 6565, and we'll provide some personal advice to help you find the best option.

There are lots of reasons why people apply through Clearing. You can too if:

  • You haven’t applied through UCAS yet.
  • You didn’t receive or haven’t accepted any offers.
  • You didn’t get the right grades for your firm and insurance offer.
  • You want to transfer from another university or college.

Most courses are available through Clearing, as long as places are available. We advise securing your places as soon as possible as when the course is full, it is no longer available through Clearing. Search our courses to see your options.

You can speak to our friendly advisors on 0208 411 6565 who will help you find the perfect course for you or chat with us.

If you have your results, you can apply now. Clearing opens on 5 July and closes on 17 October. Places are on a first-come, first-serve basis, so get in touch as soon as possible to secure your place on your course of choice. Most Clearing activity takes place around A-level results day, 17 August. Other qualifications, such as BTEC, SQA and QCF & RCF, will also be released on this day. We'll be available from 8am on results day to support you with your applications and enquiries. However, you can beat the rush by signing up for a priority phone call.

Our phone lines will be open from 8am on results day.

ANSWER A: If you are currently in UCAS

  • Step 1: Once we've given you a verbal offer over the phone, you can officially enter your Clearing choice in UCAS hub. You'll receive an offer email from us with a link to UCAS Hub - or login to your UCAS account.
  • Step 2: Log on to your UCAS Hub account and select the 'Your Choices' menu and click the 'Add Clearing Choice' button. This means that you can now refer yourself to Middlesex University London. However, if you're already holding a firm or insurance offer from another university, you'll have to contact them to release you in order to refer yourself to us.
  • Step 3: We will process this change as quickly as possible and then UCAS will send you a confirmation email notifying you of the update to your UCAS Hub.
  • Step 4: Book accommodation (if needed) and ensure you have arranged funding to pay for your fees.
  • Step 5: You're in! Your enrolment details will be sent to you via email and we will see you in September!

ANSWER B: If you are not in UCAS this academic year

  • Step 1: Once you've had a verbal offer over the phone you will receive a confirmation email from us with the detail of your offer. The email will contain a link to an acceptance form to return to us. Within 48 hours you will receive an email asking you to upload a copy of your qualifications to our Applicant Portal. You must do this, even if you previously provided your qualifications as part of the application process.
  • Step 2: You're in! Your enrolment details will be sent to you via email and we will see you in September.

If you're holding an offer from another university, then here's how you can release yourself into Clearing:

  • Sign into UCAS Hub and click your homepage's 'Decline my place' button.
  • You'll be taken through the process, including answering a question to confirm that you want to release yourself into Clearing.
  • Check that you've received an email confirming you are in Clearing.
  • Find more help on UCAS's website.
  • When you've done that, contact us on 0208 411 6565, and we'll help you find a place on a course.
It's nice and easy to accept your place, all you have to do is:
  • Go to UCAS Hub and choose the 'Add Clearing choice' button.
  • Enter the course details and our institution code M80.
  • To guarantee your place, make sure you accept it within 48 hours of receiving your offer. That way, we can guarantee your place. After that, we can only accept if there are still places on your chosen course. There's a detailed explanation of the Clearing process on the UCAS website.

You can apply to most of our courses as an international student. When you get in touch, just tell us that you're an international student and need a Student route (formerly tier 4) visa to study in the UK. If you haven't applied through UCAS yet, you'll need to complete our online application form. You can also apply directly to your nearest regional office or through one of our educational consultants in your country.

You can register for Clearing through UCAS Hub and either search through the 30,000 available courses or go through Clearing Plus and be matched to courses similar to your previous applications.

If you haven't applied through UCAS you can apply direct to the university of your choice. To apply to Middlesex University London please visit our main Clearing page.
