I live in Platt Hall, one of the student accommodations here, and having settled in for a while now, I’ve realised there are a few essentials you really shouldn’t forget when you come to uni. Whether you’re coming from across town or across the world, packing these items can make your transition much smoother and help you settle in without too many hiccups.

1. Ready-to-make food

After a long flight and a tiring journey, I wasn’t in the mood to scour unfamiliar shops or figure out the local food delivery system on my very first day. That’s why I’m so glad I packed a few ready-to-make meals. These simple, easy-to-prepare options meant I could just heat something up, have a proper meal, and get some much-needed rest. It’s a real lifesaver when you’re feeling jet-lagged and overwhelmed, and it saves you the hassle of rushing to the store in the middle of the night.

2. A good warm jacket and a small blanket

The UK is known for its unpredictable weather, and I learned early on that staying warm is crucial. I highly recommend bringing a sturdy, warm jacket - it’s an absolute must during those cold evenings. Along with that, pack a small blanket for the first few nights. It might seem like a small thing, but having a cosy blanket to snuggle under can make your new surroundings feel a bit more like home until you’re able to buy something more substantial locally.

3. Essential documents and stationery

Before you leave, make sure you have all your important documents in order. This means your passport, visa, offer letters, and any other paperwork you might need – plus extra printed copies, just in case. Keeping these documents safe and easily accessible will save you a lot of stress later on. While you’re at it, don’t forget to bring some basic stationery: a couple of pens, notebooks, and any books or study materials you might need on day one. Being organised from the start gives you a head start and helps you settle into your academic routine with ease.

4. A reliable laptop and charger

Your laptop is practically your lifeline at uni. It’s where you write assignments, do research, and keep in touch with friends and family back home. Before you head off, make sure your laptop is in good working order and that you have a reliable charger. If there are any issues, get them sorted beforehand – finding a reputable repair service once you’ve arrived can be a real headache. Trust me, you don’t want to be struggling with a dodgy laptop when your coursework starts piling up.

5. An umbrella and a good pair of shoes

Lastly, never underestimate the importance of an umbrella and comfortable footwear. The weather in the UK can change on a dime, and you’ll often find yourself caught in an unexpected downpour. An umbrella will keep you dry and save you from having to make a mad dash for cover. Equally, you’ll likely be walking a lot – from campus to the local shops, or exploring the city – so invest in a good pair of shoes that can keep up with your busy lifestyle.

Packing these essentials not only makes your arrival less stressful but also helps you settle into uni life with confidence. With a little preparation, you can focus on what really matters: making the most of your time at uni and enjoying this exciting new chapter in your life.
