Promising illustrator and animator Kremena Dimitrova, has been awarded MoDA's (Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture) Arthur Silver Prize 2013 for her collection which includes a wallpaper design, animation and children's picture book.
The Middlesex University Illustration student won the £1000 prize for her detailed silhouette-style images created using a laser cutter and based around story telling. Her ornate wallpaper, which she also used for the animation, was created similarly to old motion picture camera films, where the unique scenes were placed in sequence.
Kremena (28) was inspired by beautifully detailed silhouette-style postcards depicting courtship scenes that she had researched from MoDA.
Middlesex final year student Kremena Dimitrova said: “My work is decorative and traditional, I like experimenting and creating intricate illustrations. It’s an exploration of vintage and mystical art, as well as Eastern- European decorative arts and illustrations. I’m thrilled to have won the award and I can use the money to help me set up my own business as a freelance illustrator and animator.”
MoDA judge Richard Lumb said: “We were struck by the level of enquiry and investigation and the use of different media to develop Kremena’s ideas, resulting in an impressive and coherent body of work. We thought she produced an evocative, memorable and imaginative interpretation.”
Middlesex Illustration Course Leader and artist Nancy Slonims said: “Kremena is a truly deserving candidate for the award, she is extremely hard working and her dedication to looking at art and artists from the past is fully reflected in this prize. The MODA prize is important not only in that it recognises the students’ hard work but also that it encourages students to engage with our fantastic art and design heritage in order to inform their work.”
The Award achieved a record number of entries received this year and MoDA presented an additional 'Highly Commended' award to Middlesex Jewellery and Accessories student Emma Aitchison. Emma's innovative work was inspired by weather reading equipment in catalogues and magazines in MoDA's collection. Using a computer, a year’s worth of barometer readings and a 3D printer, Emma made a series of 12 bangles with each bangle representing a three dimensional expression of barometer readings and the weather pressure in that month.
The Arthur Silver Award is held annually for second and final year Middlesex University Art, Design and Media undergraduate students that best demonstrate that their work has been inspired by the museum’s collections.
