Barnet residents can get advice on a range of legal issues including contract law and family matters

A Middlesex University law clinic is offering free and confidential advice to residents in Barnet and the wider North London community. The clinic, which is staffed by students under the supervision of legal practitioners, operates from the University’s main campus in Hendon, North London.

Members of the public can get help on a range of legal issues including contract law with a focus on contract validity and tenancy agreements, as well as employment concerns including basic rights, and navigating internal processes such as ACAS (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) or Employment Tribunals. Individuals can also get advice on family matters covering grounds for divorce, separation and guidance in relation to child arrangements.

Clair Looby, Director of Clinical Legal Education at Middlesex University, said: “Our law clinic provides free legal information and advice to members of the public and reflects our commitment to expanding access to justice, strengthening community partnerships, and enhancing student learning. The law clinic provides a welcoming space where individuals can seek confidential advice on a range of legal issues.”

A key aim of the clinic is also to give students running the clinic invaluable real-world experience while maintaining high standards.

Jaden Francis, a First Year LLB (Law) student who helps in the clinic, said: “It has been particularly rewarding to contribute meaningful work to those who need it, while also developing key skills for a career in the legal sector, such as client communication, problem-solving, and legal research.
“This experience has significantly boosted my confidence and helped develop my professionalism and communication skills, while also providing valuable insight into the reality of working in a legal practice. It has solidified my interest in pursuing not just a legal career, but one where I can make a real difference.”

Zaina Hodkins, a third-year student studying BSc Criminology with Policing Investigations, wants to join the police after graduating and said her experience helping in the law clinic has reinforced her career goal.  She said: “The practical exposure has complemented my academic studies and has helped me develop necessary skills for my future career.  Overall, I feel my time at the legal clinic has been very enriching and I genuinely enjoy the work we do there.”

“Personally, one of the most enjoyable parts has been interacting with and assisting our clients. It has given me an understanding of how important the availability of alternative legal advice forums are to the general public, especially in the current economic climate. I have experienced first-hand how our legal clinic has provided essential help to those in need."
