Schoolchildren inspired about a future in academia after insightful Ambitions@MDX event
Year 8 students across London visited Middlesex University recently to learn about life in higher education.
Ambition@MDX, a two week event aimed specifically at Year 8 students, is designed to inspire the next generation to aim higher by giving them a taste of university life.
Pupils took part in a number of interactive activities at Middlesex including creating their ideal university character, quizzes and planning their graduation party.
“The pupils found it very insightful and it has encouraged them to think about their futures,” said Christina Thomas, Head of Year 8 at St Thomas More School.
“Several pupils said that they did not think they would go to university but the trip has changed their mind and they are looking forward to it. They have started to think about the degrees they would like to do!”
Schoolchildren were also given a behind-the-scenes tour of the University and a chance to try out some of the facilities.
“For the majority it was their very first experience of entering the hallowed grounds of such a prestigious building and they were overawed,” said Angela Beatty, Higher Education Event Co-ordinator at Whitefield School.
“The question and answer session at the end helped them to understand some of the realities of university life, while those during the day introduced new concepts and terminology,” added Michelle Dale, Business and Enterprise at St Mary’s and St John’s School.
Ambitions@MDX is one of Middlesex University’s longest running community events enabling talented students to work together to come up with innovative and creative ideas to solve set challenges .
