Placements
Middlesex University offers a range of placement opportunities as part of both our undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.
Undergraduate placement opportunities
Placement year
We offer students the opportunity to undertake a professional placement year as part of your undergraduate degree. A placement year provides structured, degree-relevant work experience, enabling you to apply academic knowledge in a professional environment while developing key graduate competencies.
A placement year enables you to:
- Gain substantial, real-world work experience
- Gain an additional 120 credits towards your degree
- Develop graduate competencies, such as resilience, communication and problem solving skills
- Build professional networks
- Improve commercial awareness and industry insight
- Strengthen your CV and graduate job prospects
- Save money - there are no tuition fees on a placement year!
Students who complete a placement year often demonstrate stronger employability outcomes and clearer career direction upon graduation. Research shows that students who undertake work experience are three times more likely to receive a definite job offer before graduating.
Placement support
Students at Middlesex University are supported throughout the placement process by our Careers and Futures Service.
Assistance offered by Careers and Futures includes:
- CV and application support
- interview preparation
- access to employer events and networking opportunities
- Placement vacancy management
- Approval and monitoring of placement providers.
Placements for international students
International students studying in the UK on a Student Visa (Student Route) can undertake a placement year, provided the placement is an approved and assessed part of their degree programme.
Short-term placements
In addition to a year-long placement, the majority of our degree programmes offer short-term placement opportunities during your studies.
These are typically delivered as an optional placement module and are worth approximately 15–30 academic credits, depending on the programme. Short-term placements allow students to gain practical work experience alongside their academic studies without taking a full year out in industry.
Availability varies by course.
Students interested in undertaking a short-term placement should get in touch with the Placement Team via email.
A standout moment during my placement [with Saracens Women's rugby team] was the opportunity to be part of the medical team on match day. It was an unforgettable experience. Preparing for emergency scenarios such as concussions, head injuries, and severe limb injuries was entirely new to me.
Postgraduate placement opportunities
We offer over 30 postgraduate programmes with placement opportunities in the arts and creative, business and law and science and technology subject areas.
Depending on the course, we have different options and durations available.
