So I'm Tremaine Baker.

Senior lecturer in initial teacher education.

When you're teaching, you're having impact on a number of students' lives.

You know, when you're teaching teachers, your impact is far wider.

That sense of sort of responsibility almost is is deeply felt.

Comparative education was my favourite.

Because it broadens your mind and you can actually see that not all children around the world have the same opportunities and how much actually politics and a lot that affects that.

So that was definitely my favourite.

The one thing that Middlesex offers is opportunities to students who wouldn't get opportunities elsewhere.

I had a module called SEND where we had this massive group session discussing SEND matters.

It was such a rich experience just debating about what the future holds in terms of SEND.

There are really well-established partnerships across the range of schools and working with schools to make sure that they've got really strong mentors, you know, that they're being really well supported on placements.

Everything we do is designed to make sure that when you leave us in the summer, you are so well prepared to go off to teach.

And on top of that, we run careers days.

We have a lot of sort of partnership with the heads and school leaders coming in talking to students about your early career teaching role.

So they're really well prepared, you know, to to apply for the jobs, then can go on and become amazing teachers.

Industry experience and partnerships

Our strong connections to local schools, early years and childcare settings, and nurseries can lead to placement opportunities in your later years of study. Local primary and secondary schools contribute to the development of our courses to keep them up to date and relevant for you. They also provide school placements for Middlesex students and frequently employ our graduates as Early Career Teachers.

Our campus is in Hendon (zone 3) in North London, but you will also spend time on placements in our partnership schools getting real world experience. These are located across Greater London and neighbouring counties.

News

“In Education Studies, we had a great time doing microteaching. Everyone designed a 10-minute activity they thought would help primary school kids learn, then took turns acting as the teacher while the rest of us pretended to be the class. I was really impressed by how the group worked together - with humour, creativity, and respect - sharing ideas and showing how imagination and teamwork make learning powerful. For their assignments, students reflected on microteaching from both the teacher’s and the child’s point of view and explored how primary schools and the national curriculum could better support children today.”

Careers

Careers and employability

A teaching or education degree opens doors to roles such as teacher, headteacher, early years practitioner, education researcher, policy adviser and more. Many of our alumni progress from Early Career Teachers into middle and senior leadership positions, often return to support new trainees through mentoring and guest lecturing.

How a PGCE leads to QTS

A PGCE is short for Postgraduate Certificate in Education and is a teaching postgraduate course designed for graduates who want to become qualified teachers in the UK. It combines university-based study with practical teaching experience in schools. A PGCE gives you both academic credits at master’s level and the practical classroom experience needed to gain QTS.

We offer PGCE Primary and Secondary routes

Middlesex University offers several initial teacher education courses, which for primary age include a three-year BA in Primary Education, the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and salaried routes, including a postgraduate teacher apprenticeship programme. For secondary teachers these include the PGCE, salaried routes and teacher apprenticeship programme.
