Department of Law and Social Sciences
The Department of Law and Social Sciences is internationally recognised for its innovative approach to teaching. We bring together diverse subjects and develop multi-skilled professionals who strive for social justice.
Our subjects range from politics, policing, criminology, and sociology to law and development. We explore the factors that limit equality of opportunity and affect human experience.
We take a critical approach and empower students to become agents of change. You will develop intellectual and practical skills, contemporary knowledge, work experience, and a global perspective. These qualities will prepare you for rewarding careers around the world.
Social sciences courses
We have a long history of academic work in criminology and sociology. Our welcoming culture values diverse people and experiences. We recognise the importance of ideas and knowledge in understanding the world in which we live.
Engagement with real-world contexts shapes our teaching. Students gain experience through:
- placements
- internships
- student-led projects.
We provide one-to-one support through skills audits, volunteering, and work placements.
Our research has an international impact. It examines subjects ranging from crime, policing, and violence to digital technologies, feminism, and popular culture.
We work with a wide range of partners, including:
- non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
- local authorities
- national agencies
- European agencies.
Through these partnerships, we provide research, consultancy, and professional development support. Visit our business and partnerships section to find out how we could work with you.
Law courses
We offer research-led undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes with supportive teaching. These programmes are delivered at our Hendon, Mauritius, and Dubai campuses.
We also supervise many PhD students, particularly in:
- European and international law
- international politics
- human rights.
Our research has professional and political influence. We engage with legal systems through conferences, consultancy, litigation, and training courses, including courses for judges.
We also manage litigation before the European Court of Human Rights. Our work involves public bodies, companies, and NGOs in law and international relations across the UK and internationally.
Our department has a strong international character. The academic team works closely with the Middlesex Law Society, which represents legal professionals across North and West London. We also organise internships with law firms in local areas and Central London.
Clinical Legal Education
The Clinical Legal Education programme is a growing area of investment for the Law Department. It includes initiatives that connect students with legal professionals, the judiciary, and voluntary organisations that provide legal services.
We provide and support opportunities for students to gain practical skills and experience. These opportunities prepare them for employment in the legal sector and other fields.
