Research activities

Clair is particularly interested in the relationship betweentheory and practice and how this helps to support the professional developmentof practitioners.  Her current researchfocuses on the professional development of academic researchers and initiativesundertaken to build research capacity within higher education.


Current Teaching

Current areas of teaching include the criminal justicesystem, youth crime and youth justice, community safety and public protection,applied criminology and reflective practice.


Biography

Clair Looby is the Director of Middlesex University’s LawClinic and a Senior Lecturer within the Department of Law and Social Sciences.  Clair oversees the operational management ofthe Law Clinic and is responsible for academic and strategic leadership in ClinicalLegal Education.  Her responsibilitiesalso includes external facing initiatives and projects that support clients,students and legal practitioners. 

A significant part of Clair’s career has involved workingwith professional cohorts of students and facilitating the development ofpractice.  Her current research focuseson the development of academic researchers and initiatives undertaken to buildresearch capacity within higher education. 

Clair is committed to developing pathways that supportaccess to justice and bridge the gap created by legal aid cuts. Through theservices provided by the Law Clinic, Clair seeks to create a dual-impactenvironment, one that enhances the educational experiences of students and alsoserves to inform and empower individuals about their legal rights. These initiatives build important connectionsbetween legal education and public service, fostering a sense of civicresponsibility in future legal practitioners, whilst at the same timecontributing to the legal literacy of underserved communities.
