Research activities

Clair is particularly interested in the relationship between theory and practice and how this helps to support the professional development of practitioners.  Her current research focuses on the professional development of academic researchers and initiatives undertaken to build research capacity within higher education.


Current Teaching

Current areas of teaching include the criminal justice system, youth crime and youth justice, community safety and public protection, applied criminology and reflective practice.


Biography

Clair Looby is the Director of Middlesex University’s Law Clinic and a Senior Lecturer within the Department of Law and Social Sciences. Clair oversees the operational management of the Law Clinic and is responsible for academic and strategic leadership in Clinical Legal Education. Her responsibilities also includes external facing initiatives and projects that support clients, students and legal practitioners.

A significant part of Clair’s career has involved working with professional cohorts of students and facilitating the development of practice. Her current research focuses on the development of academic researchers and initiatives undertaken to build research capacity within higher education. 

Clair is committed to developing pathways that support access to justice and bridge the gap created by legal aid cuts. Through the services provided by the Law Clinic, Clair seeks to create a dual-impact environment, one that enhances the educational experiences of students and also serves to inform and empower individuals about their legal rights. These initiatives build important connections between legal education and public service, fostering a sense of civic responsibility in future legal practitioners, whilst at the same time contributing to the legal literacy of underserved communities.
