Buchan's interdisciplinary research has an especial interest in the viewer's experience of animated 'worlds' and in the 'stuff', the matter of non-digital, 'pure' animation. Her research corpus is mainly animation that operates outside conventional, hegemonic and commercial entertainment canons, and that is used in fine art practice, architecture and in the sciences. She has explored these through a range of topics, including the architectural imagination of animation; animated portmanteau and comedy; installation and spatial politics; relationships between animated matter and music, sound and noise, and curating animation in high/low art economies.
Her work also has a strong curatorial aspect that aims to promote animation as an art form; she has curated exhibitions and cinema programmes most recently was a curatorial advisor for WATCH ME MOVE. The Animation Show, Barbican, London 2011 (touring in North America and Asia). Buchan is currently working on her wider Pervasive Animation project. It includes an AFI Film Reader, Pervasive Animation (2013), and she is preparing a curated exhibition at the Museum of Design Zurich, Switzerland.
