Naomi House is a Senior Lecturer in Interior Architecture and Interior Design, and Leader in Spatial Cultures and Critical Contexts. With a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Interior Design, she has an MSc in Architecture from the Bartlett, UCL. Working in practice for a number of years for clients including the RIBA, Anish Kapoor and the Tate, she has taught at the Bartlett, London Metropolitan University and the Royal College of Art where she is currently Tutor in Critical and Historical Studies.
With a PGCertHE and a SEDA qualification in Supervising Research Degrees, Naomi is a highly experienced teacher who has been involved in the writing and development of undergraduate and post-graduate courses across the broad discipline of architecture and design. Specifically this has focused on the relationship between studio practice and contextual studies, and how these might overlap to create a more holistic and integrated approach to design education. In 2010 Naomi wrote and prepared the documentation for the new MA Interior Design at the RCA, and in June 2013 she contributed to the HEAcademy Workshop at Middlesex University - 'Writing in Creative Practice: Writing and The Object. She was Joint Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and BA (Hons) Interior Design from 2006-2013, a position that she has recently handed over in order to focus on her new role as Leader in Spatial Cultures and Critical Contexts, and is the CHS link tutor for Interior Design at the Royal College of Art. Naomi is the current Internal Moderator for Painting at the RCA.
Interested in writing as a form of spatial practice, and in particular the interface between architecture and narrative, Naomi is currently working on a Reader that explores the Interior in fictional writing. She is further concerned with the discourse surrounding the interpretation and experience of buildings and spaces, both in terms of their atmospheric conditions and phenomenological encounter. Thresholds and other liminal devices are a perennial interest, particularly where they provoke and reveal the edge condition, or where they blur places and typologies. Naomi is co-author of The Fundamentals of Interior Architecture (AVA Publishing, 2007)
