  • About the competition

The Entrepreneurial Barnet Competition, 'What's Your Big Idea?' is a contest to promote and develop enterprise and entrepreneurship throughout Barnet and amongst the student population. It offers Middlesex University, Barnet and Southgate College students and local residents the opportunity to showcase their ideas, attend business development workshops and win funding to help grow their business.

The competition is led by Middlesex University, London Borough of Barnet and Barnet and Southgate College with the generous support of Brent Cross and Santander Universities.

In this edition of the contest, there is a cash prize fund of £15,000.

  • How does it work?

The contest takes place over three stages with the intention of identifying the very best ideas and talent.

Stage One: The Pitch

Submit a two-minute pitch video presenting your business or idea

Stage Two: The Plan

A series of online workshops to help develop your idea and business

Stage Three: The Final

Four finalists (two from each category) pitch their business to a panel of judges

There are two categories in the competition:

  • Commercial (ideas that have potential to become successful businesses)
  • Social Impact (ideas that have a positive impact within communities, such as an environmental, social or other not-for-profit idea)

We welcome group or team registrations in both categories.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, this contest will take place entirely online.

Eligibility

To enter the competition, contestants* must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Current Middlesex undergraduate or postgraduate student
  • Recent Middlesex University alumni**
  • Current Barnet and Southgate College student
  • London Borough of Barnet resident

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

*If you have an operational business, it must be less than two years old.
**Graduated in the last two years.
