We’re planning to teach through a flexible combination of online and face to face learning as we start the new academic year. As the only programme of its kind in the UK and Europe, this programme offers enormous benefits to students with aspirations of becoming leaders in the field of Mental Health and Substance Use (Dual Diagnosis). The course is specifically aimed at practitioners who are either in roles of leadership or are currently considering career options to move to such positions. This part-time programme is taught through distance learning methods.

What will you study on the MSc Mental Health and Substance Use (Dual Diagnosis)?

You must achieve a maximum of 180 credits to complete this course. Those who have been successful in making a Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) claim can carry forward up to 60 credits at Level 7.

You must successfully complete four core (compulsory) modules and three optional modules. All of the modules are delivered by distance learning. The exact optional modules available will depend on cohort numbers and it may not be possible to run all the modules every year. In making decisions about options you need to consider your current role, career aspirations and personal circumstances, and view more information about the possible pathways. You will have an opportunity to discuss through the optional module choices with the Programme Leader before you make your final choices.

  • PGDip Mental Health and Substance Use (Dual Diagnosis): 120 credits at level 7

Year 1 modules

  • Core modules

    • Critical Approaches to Dual Diagnosis (15 credits) - Compulsory

      The purpose of this module is to critically explore issues influencing the approach to the care of individuals coping with co-morbid mental health and substance use conditions (i.e. dual diagnosis) with due regard to policies, research, evidenced based practice, and workforce development/training. You will have the opportunity to explore the subject with due regard to international perspectives.

    • Assessment and Treatment in Dual Diagnosis (30 credits) - Compulsory

      In spite of the high prevalence, high risks and poor outcomes associated with the co-morbidity of mental ill health and substance misuse (dual diagnosis), it is widely recognized that the skills required to effectively engage, screen, assess and treat such clients who present for treatment are largely limited. This module thus aims equip you with knowledge concerning the role of engagement, screening and assessment and deepen the student’s knowledge and understanding of effective evidence based interventions used in treatment to support the recovery of service users with dual diagnosis of mental health and substance use.

  • Choose one of the following optional modules

    • Older People and Problematic Drug Use (15 credits) - Optional

      Older people face specific issues in relation to problematic substance use. Demography and a growing ageing population make understanding these ever more important. But older people’s problems tend to be more invisible, both in care services; mental health and in substance use services. This module brings these issues together from a health, social care, informal carer and public health point of view. It draws on international perspectives from experts in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and the USA, to compare and share knowledge, skills and best practice with the community.

    • Motivational interviewing: Strategies for lifestyle and behavioural changes (15 Credits) - Optional - Distance learning

      Motivational interviewing is an approach to counselling which helps individuals work through ambivalence toward change. Originally developed in the drug and alcohol field, MI is now being widely applied in a variety of settings, including social services, health care, mental health, public health, and criminal justice. This module has been developed to assist you to gain mastery in the evidence for the efficacy of Motivational Interviewing and how it links to behavioural theory; and to explore its application to your area of practice as part of the ‘process of change’ across a range of health and lifestyle behaviours.

    • Leadership for Public and Community Services (15 credits) - Optional

      The module aims to develop the your knowledge and skills to enable you to work effectively within the context of leadership and service development within the workplace. You will be facilitated to develop your own leadership role within your chosen profession, and to explore and evaluate your own leadership style. The module also aims to integrate the common needs of different groups of leaders (and where relevant managers) by focusing on the theoretical underpinnings of leadership but being flexible enough to facilitate the direct application of these knowledge and skills in the workplace.

    • Service Development and Quality Improvement (15 credits) - Optional

      This module aims to provide managers and practitioners with the opportunity to explore legislation and policy directions in public and community services. There will be a focus on the impact of the practitioner’s role in leading the development of services in a way that gives high importance to quality enhancing.

    • Drugs and Crime (15 credits) - Optional

      This module aims to develop advanced skills in the application of criminological theories and concepts in relation to drugs, drug use, and drugs control and in critically analysing the relationship between drugs and crime.  You will critically evaluate the laws, policies and institutions of drugs control within their social, political and economic contexts and compare and contrast the role of the criminal justice system in responding to drugs in various countries.  The module also aims to foster a critical interest in the reform of drugs control policy and institutions at both national and international levels.

    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (15 credits) - Optional

      You will be encouraged to master skills in cognitive behavioural strategies and techniques, based upon critical examination of theory and practice as applied to your own work with individuals with mental health problems.

    • Physical Assessment Skills for Mental Health Professionals (15 credits) - Optional

      This module has been developed to assist you to gain mastery of their physical care skills in providing comprehensive care for mental health service users (MHSUs).  The focus will include physiology as applied to clinical mental health care and a range of skills required in facilitating safe physical care for MHSUs. This module will also focus on government policy, professional practice and implementing best practice relating to physical care in mental illness.

    • Substance Use and Addiction Theories (15 credits) - Optional

      Using a ‘life course’ approach, this module aims to develop your skills in the interpretation of different stages in the course of substance use and addiction through an examination of drug use patterns and addiction theories. It also aims to enable you to critically evaluate the different theoretical approaches and develop the abilities in applying them to policies, strategies and interventions.

Year 2 Modules

  • Research based modules

    • Advanced Practitioner Inquiry (30 credits) - Compulsory for PGDip and MSc

      This module is designed to develop your understanding of a range of advanced inquiry methodologies appropriate for practitioners, in order to design a real work based project that has clear objectives to related to your own professional  development or the development of practice in your settings. You will be expected to focus on specific service, organisational or practice related issues and take initiative and leadership. It will explore approaches to advanced practitioner inquiry and innovative methods appropriate for their area of practice. It will enable critical reflection upon their position as a ‘practitioner or insider researcher’ and the ethical implications that could arise during the project.

    • Advanced Work Based Project (60 credits) - Compulsory for MSc

      This module is the culmination of a your Masters study and provides you with the opportunity to synthesise professional and academic learning. It will support you to undertake a substantial work based project that is designed to develop your own professional practice and address a practice, organisational or service issue that the you have already identified in your workplace or professional field. Building on your understanding of advanced practitioner inquiry methodologies, you will be encouraged to consider improvement and leadership strategies to support the successful management of your project and to deliver real outcomes that have the potential to transform practice.

  • Choose two of the following optional modules

    • Older People and Problematic Drug Use (15 credits) - Optional

      This module provides participants with a sound grounding in portfolio theory and equity analysis. Students are exposed to the key concepts and tools involved and further asked to apply those tools to analyse real life financial assets.

    • Motivational Interviewing: Strategies for Lifestyle and Behavioural Changes (15 credits) - Optional

      This module provides an approach that aims to engage people’s intrinsic motivation to change their behaviour. Motivational interviewing is a semi directive technique that uses questions and support to help people set their own goals, see discrepancies between where they are and where they would like to be and develop strategies to move forward.

    • Leadership for Public and Community Services (15 credits) - Optional

      This module provides participants with a sound grounding in the theory and practice of investment management. Specific aims include: strategies of portfolio construction, generating investment ideas, estimating investment risk returns and the use of derivative instruments.

    • Service Delivery and Quality Improvement (15 credits) - Optional

      This module provides participants with a sound grounding in portfolio theory and equity analysis. Students are exposed to the key concepts and tools involved and further asked to apply those tools to analyse real life financial assets.

    • Drugs and Crime (15 credits) - Optional

      This module provides participants with a sound grounding in portfolio theory and equity analysis. Students are exposed to the key concepts and tools involved and further asked to apply those tools to analyse real life financial assets.

    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (15 credits) - Optional

      This module aims to provide an overview of the nature and operation of international financial markets and their traded instruments. Students are introduced to the organisation of the international financial system, the markets for foreign exchanges, stocks, bonds, commodities and derivatives, and the risks and opportunities offered in these markets and systems. The module prepares students with essential knowledge for their future career in business, especially in the financial sector, and supports their study of other modules.

    • Substance Use and Addiction Theories (15 credits) - Optional

      This module aims to identify the major sources of risk involved in international economic and financial activity; develop the tools and techniques necessary to manage these risks and enable a critical appreciation of the interaction between corporate decision-making and capital market behaviour.

    • Physical Assessment Skills for Mental Health Professionals (15 credits) - Optional

Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.

How is the MSc Mental Health and Substance Use (Dual Diagnosis) taught?

Each module involves a variety of assessments including coursework, reports, case studies, viva voce assessment, digital story, critical appraisal of leadership and service-related research projects.

Once enrolled you will access the course learning materials and discussions via the University's student portal and virtual learning environment, Unihub which is available 24/7. Tutorial support will be provided in MyLearning, the university online teaching portal. Additional help will be offered via email, telephone and video conferencing to all distance learning students during term time.

We’re planning different scenarios for teaching so we can be flexible. While we’re social distancing, we currently plan to teach your course online through a mixture of live interactive sessions and independent learning. This will ensure you’re equipped with the same skills as on campus study, and offer you an engaging learning experience where you can meet and network with your lecturers and fellow students through online platforms. We are also exploring opportunities for face-to-face interactive sessions with smaller groups of students and staff where possible and we can make the appropriate arrangements. You will still be able to access bookable study spaces on campus, and any of the facilities and support services which are open, as well as our extensive online support.

Future plans for teaching

We’re developing our timetable for face to face teaching  with current government advice on social distancing to keep you safe. If social distancing requirements are lifted, we’ll start to safely move back towards our usual teaching arrangements with more opportunities for face to face learning. Some learning and support might stay online in this scenario. If more restrictions are put in place, or there is another lockdown, we’ll be prepared to deliver your learning and support fully online, with alternative arrangements made for any required placements. We’ll always give you notice of any changes that we make.

Support 

You’ll have a strong support network available to you to make sure you develop all the necessary academic skills you need to do well on your course.

Our support services will mainly be delivered online and you’ll have access to a range of different resources so you can get the help you need, whether you’re studying at home or have the opportunity to come to campus.

You’ll have access to one to one and group sessions for personal learning and academic support from our library and IT teams, and our network of learning experts. Our teams will also be here to offer financial advice, and personal wellbeing, mental health and disability support.
