Course overview

Planning and Delivery of Care in Practice is a 30-credit Level 7 module designed for practitioners, graduates and professionals who want to develop advanced knowledge and skills in planning, delivering and evaluating mental health care.

The module focuses on the importance of involving mental health service users, carers, families and wider support networks in care planning and recovery. You will critically explore how effective care is planned and delivered across a range of mental health settings, including statutory, voluntary sector and service user-led services.

Through engagement with current policy, practice-based learning and case-based discussion, you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to make safe decisions in complex and unpredictable situations. The module places strong emphasis on ethical practice, professional accountability, confidentiality, documentation, multidisciplinary working and advanced communication.

This module is suitable for those working, or aspiring to work, in mental health, health and social care, community services, voluntary sector organisations, or related areas. It can be taken as a standalone CPD module or as part of a relevant postgraduate programme, subject to programme approval.

About your course

Course content

This module supports you to develop a critical and practical understanding of how mental health care is planned, delivered and reviewed in practice. You will explore the principles of care planning and consider how recovery-focused, person-centred and co-produced approaches can support service users and carers.

You will explore a range of key topics, including:

  • principles of planning and delivering mental health care across different settings and services;
  • the role of statutory, voluntary sector and service user-led services;
  • the roles of different professionals within the mental health workforce, including mental health workers, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and psychologists;
  • multidisciplinary and partnership working with service users, carers, families and wider support networks;
  • the components, processes and purpose of the Care Programme Approach;
  • boundary setting and confidentiality within care planning and provision;
  • psychological, physical, social and pharmacological interventions;
  • engagement, therapeutic relationships and advanced communication skills;
  • ethics, professional accountability, documentation and record keeping;
  • reflection, clinical supervision and personal and professional development.

Learning and teaching

Teaching uses a range of approaches, including lectures, group discussion, supervision, case-based learning and practice-focused activities. Students are encouraged to link learning to their own practice and to reflect critically on the planning and delivery of care in complex mental health contexts.

The module is delivered online over 8 taught days: 29 June-3 July 2026, 6 July 2026, and 10-11 September 2026.

Formative assessment includes a group presentation of a care plan based on a given case study. This provides students with the opportunity to receive peer and tutor feedback before completing the summative assessment.

The summative assessment requires students to complete a viva based on care planning and delivery. This includes the presentation of an appropriate care plan based on a simulated video scenario, followed by verbal responses to unseen questions designed to assess students’ achievement of the module learning outcomes.

Successful completion of this module can support professional development for those working in mental health services, health and social care, community services, the voluntary sector, or related practice settings. It may also contribute towards further postgraduate study in mental health.
