Sometimes, life opens a door when you least expect it. For me, that door was Middlesex University.

Although I came from an engineering background, I always nurtured a strong passion for teaching and working with children. That passion inspired me to restart my studies and pursue a new direction in education. Middlesex University made that dream possible and helped me begin this new chapter with confidence and happiness.

At the beginning of my academic journey, I was going through a difficult time personally, as my son was undergoing a medical procedure. I was emotionally and mentally overwhelmed, and starting a new academic journey felt challenging. I reached out to Dr Nic Fryer, Senior Lecturer, MA Education Programme, who supported me, and his kindness helped me to begin my journey at MDX at the right time.

Learning, growing and being heard

All the classes were engaging and enjoyable, and our lecturers always ensured that every student felt heard. Dr Fryer’s teaching approach created a welcoming environment where I felt comfortable learning and participating in group discussions and classroom activities. I experienced his inclusive approach first-hand: he often used a variety of classroom activities to encourage everyone to participate, ensuring that each person's ideas and perspectives had a place in our lessons. Our lecturers created a safe space where we could turn our thoughts into words and feel confident that our voices mattered. Even when I arrived late, I never felt uncomfortable or excluded, which helped me feel that I truly belonged.

Also, the support I received from the lecturers at Middlesex helped me recognise my own potential and gave me the confidence to develop further, both personally and professionally.

I am especially grateful to Dr Lee Jerome and Faiza Hyder, who supported and encouraged me while I prepared for my PGCE (Physics) interview. Their guidance and practical advice, including valuable tips on how to approach and confidently answer interview questions, helped me feel much more prepared and successfully navigate the interview.

More than a university experience

My Middlesex journey introduced me to inspirational lecturers and wonderful friends from around the world. Meeting international students, sharing ideas and experiences, and enjoying gatherings together created memories that I will always treasure. We had opportunities to share and taste different cuisines and enjoy healthy food together, while learning more about each other's cultures and lives. We supported and encouraged one another throughout our journey.

A chapter I will always treasure

Looking back, my time at Middlesex University has become one of the best chapters of my life. I arrived during a challenging period, but I found encouragement, friendship, inspiration and opportunities to grow.

My educational journey reminded me that sometimes, all we need is for someone to believe in us and help us see our own potential.

For me, Middlesex University was that open door, and I will always be grateful that I walked through it.
