Discovering my passion for Biomedical Science

Choosing to study Biomedical science was driven by a genuine interest in understanding how science can improve people’s health and wellbeing. From an early age, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare. I was particularly fascinated by how diseases develop, how they can be diagnosed and how scientific research contributes to better patient care. This curiosity led me to choose BSc Biomedical Science at Middlesex University, where I knew I would develop both the scientific knowledge and practical laboratory skills needed for a career in the field.

From my first year, I found the course both challenging and rewarding. Biomedical science covers a wide range of disciplines, each playing an important role in understanding human health. As I progressed through my degree, I became especially interested in haematology, molecular biology and immunology. Learning about the complexity of the human body, the immune system and the molecular mechanisms behind disease strengthened my passion for the subject and confirmed that I had chosen the right career path.

Learning from passionate lecturers

One of the most valuable aspects of studying at Middlesex University was the support and encouragement I received from the academic staff. Their enthusiasm for their subjects made lectures engaging and motivated me to continually challenge myself academically.

I am incredibly grateful for every lecturer who contributed to my learning throughout my degree. Like Dr Beata, whose dedication and encouragement had a lasting impact on my university experience. Additionally, my dissertation supervisor Dr Song, whose guidance, expertise and support throughout my final year helped me develop both my confidence and my research skills. My lecturer’s commitment to helping their students succeed created an environment where I felt supported, encouraged and motivated to achieve my best.

Hands-on research

My final-year dissertation was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of my degree. My project investigated the effects of e-cigarettes on epithelial cells and inflammatory markers, which is an increasingly important area of biomedical research with significant implications for public health.

Working on this project gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge I had gained throughout my degree whilst developing valuable research and laboratory skills. I strengthened my abilities in experimental design, critical analysis of scientific literature, laboratory techniques, data interpretation, problem solving and scientific communication. It has also taught me the importance of accuracy, attention to detail and perseverance when conducting research.

Seeing my project develop from an initial research question into a completed dissertation was incredibly satisfying and reinforced my interest in biomedical science.

Receiving the IBMS e-Student President’s prize

One of the proudest moments of my university journey has been being selected as the recipient of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) e-student President’s Prize 2026 in recognition of excellent academic achievement.

Receiving this award is a tremendous honour and a milestone that reflects the dedication, hard work and commitment I have invested throughout my studies. Being recognised by a professional body for biomedical science is both humbling and incredibly rewarding. It has given me greater confidence in my abilities and reinforced my determination to continue developing as a biomedical scientist. I am grateful for the opportunity to celebrate this achievement alongside the lecturers who have been part of my journey.

Looking back, Middlesex University has given me far more than academic knowledge. It has provided a welcoming and supportive community where I have been encouraged to grow both personally and professionally. The approachable lecturers, modern laboratories, excellent learning facilities and student support services created an environment where I felt able to thrive throughout my studies.

Beyond developing scientific knowledge, my time at Middlesex has helped me to build confidence, resilience, teamwork, communication and critical thinking skills that will remain invaluable throughout my career.

Looking ahead to postgraduate study

Having now graduated; I am excited for the next stage of my professional journey. My goal is to continue my education by undertaking a master’s degree enabling me to deepen my knowledge and further develop the skills needed to contribute to research and healthcare. Receiving the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) e-student President’s prize has strengthened my confidence and reinforced my commitment to pursuing excellence in the field. I look forward to building on everything I have learned at Middlesex University and making a meaningful contribution to biomedical science in the years ahead.
