The last year of my degree

Finishing my final year as a Business Management student at Middlesex University feels like closing a chapter that has shaped me in ways I never expected. Out of all the modules I completed, the consultancy project I recently completed stands out as the most transformative.

Working with students from international campuses

In this module, we worked in international teams with students from campuses in Dubai and Mauritius to deliver a real consultancy project for an international client, applying our knowledge to real business challenges. It wasn’t just another assignment or academic requirement; it became the experience that helped me understand who I am, what I’m capable of, and where I want to go next.

When the module began, I didn’t know what to expect. I was told it would be different from anything we had done before - more practical, more intense. Working in a diverse team pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t expect. We all came from different backgrounds, cultures, and ways of thinking, and learning how to collaborate effectively taught me patience, adaptability, and confidence. We held late night calls, shared ideas, debated strategies, and supported each other through every challenge. It wasn’t always perfect, but it was always rewarding, and far more connected to the real world, which made me nervous. I had spent years learning theories and frameworks, but applying them to a real business felt like stepping into unfamiliar territory. What I didn’t realise then was that this challenge would become the highlight of my entire degree.

Learning through real world experience

Being assigned to work with a real company changed everything. Suddenly, the work I was doing had purpose. Market research wasn’t just for a grade. It was something a business genuinely needed. Analysing competitors, exploring pricing strategies, and understanding consumer behaviour all felt more meaningful because the stakes were real.

It wasn’t always perfect, but it was always rewarding.

Our first client meeting was a moment I’ll never forget. I walked in feeling nervous, unsure if I was prepared enough. But once the conversation started, something clicked. I found myself speaking confidently, asking questions, and engaging in a way that felt natural. It was the first time I truly felt like a consultant, not just a student.

Teaching that made a difference

One of the biggest reasons this module had such an impact on me was the teaching. The support, guidance, and structure we received made all the difference. Instead of simply delivering lectures, we were given simulations, practical exercises, and real life scenarios that pushed us to think like professionals. We were encouraged to step outside our comfort zones, challenge ourselves, and take ownership of our learning.

What stood out most was the focus on personal development. We were taught how to communicate professionally, how to structure our ideas, how to present with confidence, and even how to approach job searches and career planning. These weren’t just academic lessons; they were life skills that I know I’ll carry with me long after graduation.

The Poster Show: A day I’ll never forget

The Poster Show was one of the most chaotic yet memorable experiences of my degree. Everything that could go wrong seemed to go wrong at once. There were last minute issues, unexpected changes, and moments of pure panic. And then, just when I thought I could hide in the background, my team chose me to present.

I froze. I forgot everything I had rehearsed. I laughed nervously, stumbled over my words, and felt completely overwhelmed. But somehow, once the formal presentation was over and visitors began approaching our stand, everything changed. I spoke confidently, explained our research clearly, and felt completely in my element. It was a moment that showed me how much I had grown, even if the journey there was messy.

Skills that will shape my future

This global consultancy module helped me develop skills that go far beyond the classroom. I’ve developed a consulting mindset, enabling me to analyse problems, structure solutions, and think strategically. It strengthened my professional communication skills, allowing me to speak with confidence and clarity in real business settings. I also developed my ability to work in teams and take on leadership roles, learning how to navigate different personalities and working styles effectively. At the same time, I became more adaptable, learning to stay calm and focused when things didn’t go to plan.

Most importantly, it helped me discover something I had been unsure about for years - what I want to do after graduation. This module made me realise that consultancy is where I feel energised, challenged, and excited. It gave me direction at a time when I needed it most.

More than just a degree

Studying at Middlesex University has given me more than a degree. It has given me confidence, clarity, and a sense of purpose. The diverse community, supportive environment, and hands on learning opportunities have shaped me into someone who feels ready to step into the professional world. The consultancy project didn’t just prepare me for my future - it helped me discover it.
