Melissa Carmen Mousseni, BEng Mechatronics and Robotics alumnaBefore starting my Mechatronics and Robotics degree at Middlesex University, I wasn’t expecting to get involved in as many opportunities as I have over the last few years.
Hands-on learning
One of the best things about the course has been how much hands-on experience I’ve had. Rather than just learning theory, I had the chance to work with real equipment, including FESTO automation systems and industrial robot arms such as the ABB IRB robots and Niryo robots. Being able to use this equipment throughout the course helped me understand how engineering concepts are applied in practice and gave me valuable technical skills that I can take into industry.
Support at Middlesex
One experience I particularly enjoyed was becoming a Student Learning Assistant for first-year students. Supporting CAD sessions allowed me to help newer students who were in the same position I was a few years ago. It was rewarding to see students gain confidence in their work and it also helped me develop my own communication and leadership skills. I also had the opportunity to support MDX’s Open Days, where I spoke to prospective students about the course and shared my experience of studying at Middlesex.
My final-year project, an automated sorting system, has probably been one of the most challenging but rewarding parts of my degree. Throughout the project, the lecturers and technical staff were always available to offer guidance and support whenever I needed it. Their encouragement helped me stay motivated and overcome obstacles along the way.
Becoming career-ready
The support available outside of lectures has also had a big impact on me. The careers team were incredibly helpful when it came to improving my CV, preparing for interviews and exploring placement opportunities. Attending careers fairs gave me the chance to connect with employers and learn more about different engineering roles. And, with the support of the Middlesex career advisors, I was able to prepare successfully for my placement at AWE, which has been a valuable step towards my future career.
My time at Middlesex helped me grow both personally and professionally. I’ve gained practical engineering experience, developed confidence in my abilities, met great people and been given opportunities that I didn’t expect when I first started university. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received and excited to take everything I’ve learned into the next stage of my career.
