Simon, Student Advisor at Middlesex UniversityComing to university through Clearing is an exciting milestone, but having worked as a student advisor at Middlesex for years, I know first-hand that it can also feel a bit overwhelming. One common worry students have around this time of year is: “How do I sort out my student finance in time?”
If you’re securing your place at Middlesex right now, navigating your funding doesn’t have to be stressful, and our team is here to guide you.
Here are some key things to help get your funding sorted smoothly:
Don’t wait for a confirmed offer to apply
One of the biggest misconceptions students have is thinking they have to wait for an official university confirmation before applying to Student Finance England (SFE). In reality, SFE applications take several weeks to process. Even if you aren’t 100% sure of your final course details yet, submit your application on GOV.UK today so they can start assessing your eligibility and calculating your Maintenance Loan straight away.
Switching your application to Middlesex
If you already applied for student finance with another university in mind and are now joining us at Middlesex, you will simply need to move your funding over to MDX.
- Before 1st September: You can do this yourself in a couple of minutes. Just log into your online SFE account, go to your active 2026/27 application, choose the option to change your course/university, and update your details to Middlesex University.
- After 1st September: SFE locks online self-service updates after this date, but please don’t panic. Once your place at MDX is officially finalized, let our team know and we can submit an electronic Change of Circumstance directly to SFE on your behalf to transfer your tuition fees and maintenance loan.
Managing any delays
Because switching universities during Clearing can sometimes lead to a short delay in your first loan payment, it helps to plan ahead for your initial weeks on campus. If you find yourself in a tight spot or your funding hasn't arrived when term starts, reach out to us. We can check on your status, help you manage your budget, and explore interim support options.
Your quick action checklist
- Apply today: Submit your initial application on GOV.UK Student Finance if you haven’t yet.
- Update your choice: Change your university to Middlesex on your SFE portal before 1st September.
- After Sept 1: Contact us if you have changed your University choice and we'll submit the update to SFE.
- Get in touch: if you need help: Email the Student Advice Team or book an appointment online.
We can’t wait to welcome you to #TeamMDX!
