The Foundation Year in Arts and Creative Industries is for students who want the time and freedom to explore before they specialise. I don't expect you to arrive with a three-year plan - I want is for you to experiment across disciplines, build your creativity, take on challenges that make you slightly nervous, and find the pathway that actually feels like yours.

Whether you're drawn to animation, illustration, film, fashion, fine art, games, interiors, branding or digital media, this year gives you the space to try different ways of making, thinking and creating before you move onto your chosen BA and the flexibility to change direction.

Through practical, project-based learning, you'll take your work from initial research and concept right through to a finished outcome, developing a genuine understanding of professional creative practice along the way.

“The past year has been a wonderful experience, from visiting galleries around London to learning and trying out new mediums that I had never used before.

Through this course I have gained knowledge on a plethora of new techniques and skills. I have tried screen printing, ring making, life drawing and sculpting as well as many other mediums that are all great options and ideas to vary my work and skillset, as well as to use in future projects. “Reflecting on this year, I can say it has been a really positive and meaningful experience for me, especially in how much I have grown creatively and gained confidence in my work.

Through these modules, I feel like I developed both my technical skills and my creativity. I enjoyed seeing my ideas come to life as finished pieces, and it gave me a strong sense of achievement.

In Module 1, I also had a really inspiring experience learning about Japanese pictograms and symbols. Visiting Japan House London helped me understand how simple shapes and visuals can communicate strong meanings. This not only improved my drawing skills but also introduced me to a new visual style that I found interesting and enjoyable to explore and I really enjoyed visiting Tate Modern, where I created patterns inspired from different materials and art for what I saw for my diary. This experience helped me think more creatively about shapes, repetition, and design, and it gave me new ideas that I could bring into my own work. It made me more aware of how artists use patterns and visuals to communicate ideas in different ways.

This year has helped me grow both creatively and personally. I feel more confident in my ability to create visual work and express my ideas. Looking ahead, I want to keep building on these experiences , experimenting with new techniques, and combining different styles, such as digital design and hand-drawn work. I also want to take on more creative challenges and push myself further so I can continue improving. This year has motivated me to keep learning and has made me excited about what I can achieve in the future.”
