Choosing where to study creative courses in London is about more than finding the right degree. You want to develop your ideas, gain practical experience and prepare for a career in the creative industries. At Middlesex University, MDX Studios connects creative education with professional practice from the start of your studies.

MDX Studios has been part of our Faculty for the past year or so, but what does it mean for how our students learn? The Faculty has a long heritage, dating back to the Hornsey School of Art, one of the University's founding colleges. That's something to be proud of, but standing out among universities offering similar courses is increasingly hard. I believe MDX Studios is how we do this.

More than a place to study

MDX Studios began as our name for partnerships with independent producers in film and screen, giving students real-life experience on film sets. That's still at the heart of what we do, but it's grown into the name for all the Faculty's creative disciplines, across media, design and the arts. For me, studying a creative subject should mean more than learning in a classroom, it should mean experimenting, collaborating and discovering how your skills translate into professional practice.

Where creative ideas become real projects

MDX Studios is also a creative agency and production hub, with specialist expertise, technical knowhow and industry-standard facilities to help you bring your ideas to life.

You could find yourself experimenting with new forms of broadcast media, like vertical drama, like our students who worked with a creative agency to develop and film their own mini vertical films in a full day session informed by storytelling workshops.

You could work alongside developers and local authorities on live urban regeneration projects, as part of our Architecture and Built Environment team, like our students working on a live design project to reimagine the foyer of the historic Phoenix Cinema in north London.

Or you could crew a real film production, gaining the kind of on-set experience most students only read about, like our students who gained on-set experience working with the specialist crew of HBO Max's Youth, including the Crowd Assistant Director, Prop Art Department and Digital Imaging Technicians.

Starting your creative career from day one

I believe prospective students should look at how a course prepares them for life after graduation. MDX Studios means our students learn and behave as professionals from day one, beginning their careers at the start of their studies, not at the end when they graduate. Alongside their specialist skills, they build industry insight, professional networks, confidence and a stronger portfolio, shaping where their creative interests can take them next.

Connecting with London's creative industries

London is home to a diverse, evolving creative sector, and I want our students to benefit from it. Building real partnerships and professional experience into how we design and deliver our courses is central to giving you the skills you need for the careers of the future.

HBO, Netflix and the BBC have all filmed content on our campus in the last year, bringing creative education, industry experience and new ideas together.

Building your creative future

I am extremely proud of our progress. MDX Studios is an idea and a catalyst that is transforming the Faculty. Our design studio and graphic design academics have collaborated on a brand identity for MDX Studios, which we're rolling out across our home in the Grove building, part of the change you'll see for yourself when you visit.

If you're considering an arts or creative course in London, look beyond the course title. Think about the experiences you want, the ideas you want to explore and the future you want to build.

That's what makes MDX Studios special to me: bringing ideas to life, learning through collaboration and shaping your creative future while studying at Middlesex University.
