Over 100 design specialists have gathered at Middlesex to discuss how the pace of modern life affects design
Middlesex is hosting this year’s Design History Society conference, which started yesterday and will run until 10 September.
Design and Time addresses recent debates about the increasing speed of life. Over 100 design specialists including academics, historians and curators from all over the world are attending to showcase the best in current design-history thinking.
“We live in an era of unprecedented change where it can be difficult to keep up with the pace of technology. Smartphones can link us to a virtual reality on a daily basis and the internet and social media have changed our relationships with each other and our experience of time.”
For Dan Davis, a current design history PhD student at Middlesex, the conference offers him the opportunity to present aspects of his research in an international arena.
“I’m looking forward to meeting with scholars and academics from across the world to share and exchange ideas,” says Dan.
Dan, whose research focuses on the design and time aspects of steamships in the nineteenth century, will use his experience at the conference to influence his teaching in the upcoming year.
“As well as presenting, I’m looking forward to meeting with scholars and academics from across the world to share and exchange ideas,” explains Dan.
“The conference is a further opportunity for me to inspire my art and design students with the very latest ideas and approaches from design history research.”
Former Middlesex PhD student Dr Leslie Atzmon will also be attending the conference as a keynote speaker. Leslie, who received a PhD in design history from Middlesex, is now a Professor of Graphic Design and Design History at Eastern Michigan University.
Middlesex was first placed at the heart of design history in 1976 when it hosted the Second Conference of Twentieth Century Design History on the theme of Leisure and Design in the 20th Century.
