Simon joined Middlesex in 2001, having taught at various universities in the USA. He teaches in the Information Systems area of Computer Science, and has served as programme leader for various courses in the Department. Simon specialises in computer ethics, and is interested in the social, legal and professional issues involved in designing, implementing and using ICTs. Recent research has looked at the ethics of smart phones, social networking services, and intelligent environments. Simon brings an inter-disciplinary perspective to bear on his teaching and research, drawing on an academic background in communication and cultural studies. He gained his doctorate from the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at Birmingham University, and has published research on popular music, youth culture and arts policy. He also draws on practical experience of working in the music industry as a publicist for independent record labels.

I have 30 years of teaching experience in higher education in the UK and the USA. As a programme leader and e-learning author, I have been responsible for developing several new courses and modules, and creating online and offline teaching and learning materials. I am interested in ways to enhance student engagement in the learning process through learner-centred approaches that include small group work, project-based coursework, and innovative forms of feedback and e-assessment.

A research pilot in the healthcare sector, developing Internet of Things monitoring techniques for patients suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease that are human understandable, can be certified by automated techniques, and provide for dynamic security and risk evaluation.
