Cultural Literacy and Learning in Universities: The Importance of Free Minds in the quest for dignity and progress
Claire Fox is Director of the Institute of Ideas. She established the agenda-setting organisation to create a public space where ideas can be contested without constraint while working as co-publisher of the current affairs journal LM magazine.
The Institute of Ideas' mission is to ‘expand the boundaries of public debate by organising conferences, discussions and salons, and publishing written conversations and exchanges’. The IoI hosts a yearly two-day festival, the Battle of Ideas. Claire convenes the annual event with the next one taking place at the Barbican in London in October 2016.
An Executive Board member of the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) and UCL, Claire is also a Fellow of Wellington College.
She has a particular interest in education and social issues such as crime and mental health. A panellist on BBC Radio 4’s The Moral Maze, she is regularly invited to discuss topics such as developments in culture, education and the media on TV and radio programmes such as Question Time and Any Questions?
Writing for national newspapers and a number of specialist journals, Claire is a columnist for the Times Education Supplement and MJ (Municipal Journal). She is author of a new book on free speech, entitled I find that offensive (Biteback) and No strings attached! Why Arts Funding should say no to instrumentalism (Arts&Business).
She previously worked as a mental health social worker and as a lecturer in English literature.
