Seeing our students stand beside their work at Design and Art Direction (D&AD) New Blood was a proud moment for me as Programme Leader for BA Advertising, PR and Branding. D&AD is one of the most recognised and respected platforms in the creative industries and New Blood gives emerging talent a valuable opportunity to be seen by professionals across advertising, design, branding and creative communication.

This year feels especially meaningful because our presence at D&AD is about students showing finished work. It was also about showing the collective energy of Media and Communications within MDX Studios. Bringing our students' work to New Blood reflects months of dedication from students, academic colleagues and technical teams across Media and Communications. From selecting and preparing work to shaping the final stand, the process represents more than three months of collaborative effort.

For me, it is a creative showcase shaped by a whole learning community. It also highlights the breadth of creative practice across MDX Studios. Our presence at D&AD brings together work from BA Advertising, Public Relations and Branding, BA Digital Media and Communication, BA Graphic Design, BA Illustration and BA Fashion Communication. Together, these disciplines demonstrate that MDX Studios is not simply a place where creative work is produced, but a space where ideas, stories, audiences, brands and cultural conversations are explored through practice. It is where creative communication, visual practice and cultural insight comes together.

Learning through real creative practice

This experience reflects the strengths of our Media and Communication courses within MDX Studios. Together, these courses combine research, strategy, storytelling, visual design, making and professional practice, ensuring students develop both creative thinking and industry-ready skills.

Live briefs, industry collaborations and real-world projects are embedded throughout the curriculum. In BA Advertising, PR and Branding, students develop campaign ideas, brand strategies and portfolio-ready outcomes through live projects. They learn how to move from research to insight, from insight to concept and from concept to a clear and compelling creative response.

Building confidence for industry

For students, D&AD New Blood is much more than an exhibition. It is an opportunity to see themselves as emerging creative professionals. They learn how to talk confidently about their work, respond to different perspectives, receive industry feedback and understand how their creative voice fits within the wider creative industries.

What impresses me most is not only the quality of the final work, but the confidence students develop in explaining their ideas. As they progress through the course, I see their independence, critical thinking and resilience grow. They become stronger storytellers, more thoughtful researchers and more confident creative problem-solvers.

What sets Middlesex graduates apart is their combination of creativity, practical experience, cultural awareness and adaptability. They leave with more than a portfolio. They leave with the confidence to think critically, collaborate generously and tell meaningful stories. Through D&AD New Blood, we are proud to demonstrate the role that Media and Communication plays within MDX Studios, preparing students to think critically, work creatively and contribute confidently to the future of the creative industries.
