Riga International Film Festival to show Middlesex students’ films

The biggest film festival in the Baltic region will screen Middlesex University BA Film students' work during October.

The 2Annas Riga International Film Festival logoBA Film students from Middlesex University will see their work on the silver screen in October, when the Riga International Film Festival 2Annas 2014 features their work as part of its acclaimed programme.

Around 30 students and recent graduates from the course fly to the Latvian capital on Thursday 23 October, to take in the festival and see their degree films screened in front of an international audience of film fans.

A total of ten student films will be shown at the festival, the majority of which were made by the Class of 2014 as their final year projects, with one second year film also featuring on the reel.

After assembling a show reel of their work, students from the course sent it to the Festival Director and were delighted to be invited to attend. The School of Media and Performing Arts is also supporting the students by funding the trip.

"Many of our students have never shown their work to the public, and some have never been to a film festival, so the opportunity to see their work in that environment, to network and also have the opportunity to answer questions in a Q&A session is just invaluable," says David Heinemann, Senior Lecturer on the BA Film degree.

The 2Annas is the biggest film event in the Baltic states and to be invited to show their work at the festival is a demonstration of the standard of work produced by students on the Film degree.

"We require that students work on at least two other films to their own, whether that's editing them, working behind the camera, acting as assistant director," David adds.

"If you're going to go into the industry you have to be prepared to work hard so this gets them ready for that, as well as learning the different roles and things like how the hierarchy on a film set works."
