The NUS Awards celebrate the work of hundreds of Students’ Unions nationwide, and aim to recognise their campaigns, diversity, impact, and contributions to both their universities and local communities.
“We are delighted to have been recognised by our National Union of Students,” said Ed Marsh, CEO at Middlesex Students’ Union. “MDXSU has transformed over the past five years, and to be recognised as the most innovative, inspiring and inclusive students’ union in the UK should make everybody involved proud. Whether it’s campaigning to resettle refugees, working to improve mental health in our local schools, or working alongside local faith leaders to tackle Islamaphobic and Anti-Semitic hate crime, the work of students’ unions like ours really does matter.”
Professor Andrea Dlaska, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Learning and Innovation, said: “We are delighted, but not surprised, that our Students’ Union has won this accolade. Middlesex University puts students at the heart of everything we do, and we work in close partnership with the Union to engage our students in further enhancing their learning experience and the support we provide.
It is so important that students feel empowered to tell us how we can improve their experience, as well as building their own essential life skills while making an impact on their local community. We are very proud of the wonderful recognition MDXSU has received with this important award.”
Programmes initiated by MDXSU include the establishment of a community kitchen for local people, a partnership with North London Citizens to provide Middlesex students with paid work placements alongside local community groups, and an all-encompassing campaign to make sure students can co-shape their experience while studying at Middlesex.
The NUS awards are judged by an independent panel of influential people from across the education sector and beyond. The panel noted that the Union demonstrated continual improvement, particularly with student-led activity and representation. MDXSU’s activity and achievements were said to have “matched their ambition to become the most innovative, inspiring and inclusive” students’ union in the UK.
