Middlesex Scholarship students awarded at special ceremony

The University celebrates the achievements of its students at a high profile ceremony.
At a high-profile ceremony held in November in the University’s glazed Quadrangle on the Hendon campus, over 130 students were presented with the scholarships they had worked so hard to gain. Middlesex’s Chancellor, the Right Honourable Lord Sheppard of Didgemere was on hand to make the presentations at the ceremony, and in his speech acknowledged the dedication and determination of the students.
Middlesex offers a wide range of different scholarships – some, known as the Chancellor’s Scholarships – are awarded in the name of Lord Sheppard and go to students who have excelled in their academic work, in sporting activity or for making a contribution to the communities in which they live and work. Others recognise and celebrate academic achievement as well as alumni who are returning to Middlesex for postgraduate study. Future Gold scholarships are substantial awards to a very small group of students who demonstrate real potential to represent Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Middlesex University enjoys strong links with many leading companies and organisations and the University is proud that so many of these companies generously support Middlesex scholars, not just financially but often with time and energy, mentoring, advice and guidance. One such company is Conygar Investments Company PLC which is a property trading and development group dealing primarily in UK property. The group aims to invest in property assets where it can add significant value using our property management, development and transaction structuring skills. Annually, the company rewards two students at the start of their undergraduate programme who are the first generation in their family to go to university. This year Jerome Harewood who is studying for a BA in Business and Human Resources Management, and Ufuk Ekbic who is studying for a BA in Business Accounting, were both recommended for the Conygar Investment Company PLC Scholarship by academics from the colleges they attended before coming to Middlesex.
For some years now, Precedent Communications have been rewarding high achieving graphics students at the end of the second year of their Middlesex degree programme and have shown promise and talent through the project work they produce. Louise Kent who is studying for a BA in Graphic Design was selected for the Precedent Communications Scholarship for Graphic Design for her skills, high level of commitment and enthusiasm throughout her studies and her work placement.
The Apple Campus Representative Award is a different type of scholarship, because it provides the scholar with the latest Apple hardware, software and systems support rather than financial support. Each year Apple works with academic staff from across the University to select one inspiring student who has shown technical competency and displays a keen interest in Apple products. This year Hakan Sezer who is studying for a BSc in Business Economics was chosen to be the Apple Campus Representative for his ambition and willingness to share his skills and knowledge of Apple’s products with his fellow students. Hakan is now probably the best equipped student on any Middlesex campus, with all the latest Apple hardware and software to hand.
The University regularly reviews its suite of scholarships to make sure they are fit for purpose. This year sees the introduction of two new types of scholarship and a one-off scholarship that is awarded to ten Indian postgraduate students. It celebrates the fact that 2009 is the tenth anniversary of the opening of Middlesex’s offices across India. The first of the two new scholarships are for Work Based Learning students who are working in the voluntary and community sector and study for a Masters in Work Based Studies. The other new scholarships are entitled Rise Up and are designed to reward outstanding undergraduate students who do not come from a background where higher education is the norm, or who have overcome personal difficulties to excel at university. Many guests at the Scholarship ceremony commented on the impressive strength of character and determination many Rise Up scholars have demonstrated in getting to university and then going on to excel in their chosen programmes.
The Chancellor, Lord Sheppard, summed up the occasion of Middlesex University’s annual Scholarship Ceremony with these words: “It is with great pride that I stand on the stage and shake the hands of all the worthy young people that are being awarded this evening. I’m sure you are as proud as me”.
The University has scholarships on offer for 2010 entry and current students can also apply for awards.
