Middlesex University sports student and Team GB sprinter CJ Ujah breaks BUCS Championship record set in 2009
BSc Strength and Conditioning student CJ Ujah smashed the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) men’s 100m record on the way to claiming the sprint title at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium last weekend.
After matching the previous record of 10.23 seconds in his heat, the Team GB member than set a blistering new championship record 10.17 in the semi-final.
Though he was not able to improve on this time in the final, CJ still won comfortably, clocking 10.32 – almost a tenth of a second faster than his nearest rival.
Despite breaking the university record, European Junior Champion CJ was some way off his incredible personal best of 9.96 seconds set in 2014, when he became the youngest Briton and only the fifth ever to break the iconic 10-second barrier.
Commenting on his success at the BUCS event, the 22-year-old Rio Olympics hopeful said: “I’d have liked to go a bit faster in the final but I didn’t have the start. But I take from this the positives. I felt smooth and upright, so I’ll keep working on it.”
Mel Park, Head of Sport and Recreation at Middlesex University, said the performance was a fantastic achievement.
“CJ has put down a marker which is likely to remain for many years to come,” he said.
“He follows in the footsteps of athletes such as Simeon Williamson and Tremayne Gilling who previously won this event representing Middlesex University.
“His Championship record will hopefully give him increased confidence to take things to the next level later this summer, when he’ll hopefully be representing GB at the Rio Olympics.”
